Default 8600GT - Not recognized, cannot install drivers

Hi there Overclock.net!

I recently purchased an XFX PVT84JUDD3 GeForce 8600GT XXX 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express, graphics card. Whenever I plug it in to the PCI-E slot, nothing comes on screen. I cannot install any drivers, either. The error I get is:

"The VGA detected seems not XFX's product. Please go to www.nvidia.com to get the driver for the other NVIDIA VGA"

I am a fresh install of Windows XP Professional, with no other video card drivers installed.
Can anyone help me here?

Here is my dxdiag:

Code:
       Machine name: HOME-COMPUTER
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 1 (2600.xpsp1.020828-1920)

System Manufacturer: Compaq-Presario
       System Model: RZ385AA-ABA SR2172NX
               BIOS: HPQOEM - 1000729
          Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
             Memory: 1792MB RAM

Primary File System: NTFS
    DirectX Version: DirectX 8.1 (4.08.01.0810)

that error message might be pointing you in the right direction. Have you tried downloading the drivers for an 8600 from nvidia.com?

Yes, I downloaded a driver released on July 9th, 2008. Still no dice.
Error from that setup:
"The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."

Update: computer booted up with the 8600GT in, but I cannot run the setup from the included XFX CD. Windows Explorer keeps crashing or will not start the setup program.

Wow!
After installing drivers and restarting computer, I was surprised to see everything on the lowest possible settings: 640x480 resolution and 4 bit color quality. I cannot change either of these!
Here is a screenshot:
