Default ATI tools and overclocking 8800 GTS

I’ve just got a XXX 8800GTS 640 Mb (G80) GFX card to run on my vista based PC. I’m new to overclocking so I’m not sure as to what exactly I’m doing. I’ve read a few posts and from that info downloaded EVGA precision to overclock and ATI Tools to stress test. When load ATI it doesn’t detect my cards stock frequencies and shows the frequencies as 0 for all the sliders, but when you hover over the task bar temp icon shows the correct frequencies and the temp that EVGA reports. When I first press the stress test it detects multiple errors straight away even before I overclock. However if I click on the profile loader (that shows all 0’s in the top left corner of the app) and then stress test it then runs with no errors. The task bar icon stills says the correct frequencies as reported in EVGA precision. I’ve then upped the core frequencies in steps to about 670Mkz and when I stress test at each pont i don’t get any errors. The temp goes to about 70c with the fan on 100%

I suppose my questions are

is the second stress test working?

Should I use something else to stress test with,

What values am I likely to get to overclocking?

And

What temps are safe for overclocking.

Thanks

I've heard good things about FurMark for stress testing the GPU.

it almost sounds like you are using vista 64 bit

If you have 3dMark06 registered you can run the canyon flight demo and snowy demo with your max res and max filters applied and I gaurantee you it will stress the GPU. You can also DL the demo and max out the filters through the control panel. I don't have Vista but I'm sure Vantage will stress it as well. ATI tool doesn't quite do it for me either

Thanks for that.

I just don't trust ATI tools now. Just seems so odd that it report errors at stock speed, when clear there aren't as i've played games on it for hours. And then when i push the core upto 670 it doesn't report errors once i've selected the 0/0/0 profile, but both eVGA and ATI tool then report the core as 670. I will try some of the other programmes mentioned.

670 seems very high as most people seems to suggest that a core of about 640 is pushing it.

Also, is it better to push the core to it's highest before changing the mem frequenciy, and should i unlink the shader frequency when upping the core frequency in eVGA precisoin?

Thanks again.

Depends. I don't have much experience OCing the G80 chips, however if they follow the trend of most other nVidia cards I've been tinkering with, the memory can OC quite high. My 7800 GTX memory increased over 225MHZ! 8800 GTS 512 increased just as much, GX2 by 300MHZ etc. I would first find the limit of the core clock. Then I'd back it down by about 20MHZ. Then push the memory.

Ended up setting the core to 676 and the mem to 2152 from 513 and 1578. Seems like quite a good overclock to me.
