Default GTX 285 + 190.62 WHQL crash with high AA

Hi,

I just updated my NVIDIA driver from 186.18 to 190.62 from nvidia.com

First thing I found out, EVGA precision 1.8.0 don't display GPU temperature anymore. GPU-Z showed false reading temperature(29' idle)

Everest still display them though (I'm using this at the moment).

Then I ran 3D Mark 06 (with 8 sample AA and anisotropic), after about 30 seconds it just went to black screen. Then back to windows with pop up error message (I can't remember what the error was).
Followed by vista error:
"display driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered"

Tried COD 5 at max setting, found artifacts (especially with water effect)
Crysis warhead max setting crashed (monitor just went "no input detected")

I lowered my clock to: 700/1594/1300 from 740/1685/1400 (linked both GPU)

740/1685/1400 was fine with 186.18, CoD and crysis were running smoothly

what is going on? does gtx 285 tend to crash with driver 190.62 at high AA?

If the previous drivers were fine for you I'd simply revert back to them. I'd wait out newer drivers and give those a shot when they arrive. That's the easy way.

The next thing you could check is your airflow and temps, the new driver may have optimized something for the GPU making it work more and thus produce more heat. What you describe seems to be an overheat issue in the RAM area.

That leads to the next thing which is that the new driver adjusts memory timinigs in an effort to optimize stock settings making the memory unstable at any OC slightly over stock.

Did the cards work OK again when you reverted them back to stocksettings?

190.62 are crap
use the 191.03 beta. Perfect.

to get the temp readings again delete the following two entries from the registry.

open regedit then search and delete all instances of RmThermalProviderInfo and RmThermalProviderNum entries in the registry. Then reboot.

Hi,

I installed 191.03 beta now. It's weird now, I tried furmark benchmarking (with gpu-z as monitoring program), my cards core and memory only goes up to: core=300 memory=400?

they are running at 700/1594/1300

wHAT THE FARK??? can it be SLi bridge issue?

I'm thinking there's a lot of driver residue on your system. Generally using beta drivers on your main rig is not a good idea, most often versioning in beta files hasn't been updated and when you want to revert back to older drivers it may use beta files still because it doesn't see a difference in versioning.

I think you need to uninstall your drivers, and then use the DriverCleaner to rid yourself of any driver remnants and only then reinstall your original driver or the beta driver if you want to give that one a try.

NVidia drivers gave me a lot of these kind of problems in the past and the best would be to run a DriverCleaner sweep every time you'd want to install different drivers.

I agree that some driver cleaning software should be used. I personally recommend Driver Sweeper.

Here is the correct way to use Driver Sweeper (this applies to all driver cleaning programs):
  1. Install Driver Sweeper.
  2. Uninstall the driver using the uninstaller (Programs and Features).
  3. Reboot into Safe Mode (press F8 as soon as it begins booting, and hold it until you see that it's in Safe Mode)
  4. Run Driver Sweeper.
  5. Select "NVIDIA - Display".
  6. Click "Clean"
  7. Reboot normally
  8. Install the desired driver.

I did clean up drivers using driver sweeper in safe mode.
I'm on 186.18 again now. Can it be rendering problem from SLi bridge. Coz the truth is I'm still waiting for my long SLi bridge, so I took my 3-way SLi bridge and snap the middle slot using pliers. LOL So I can use it on PCI slot 1 and 3.

I snapped this:

because it wouldn't fit on 2 x gtx 285 with accelero gtx 280 cooler

or the setup is not optimized for 16 x AA?

I don't know for sure, but it's my guess that perhaps the modified SLI bridge is the culprit. But I don't know for sure.
