Default Graphics Card: Unstable Overclock Symptoms?

I know that when u over clock your graphics card, u might get symptoms like random freezing, colored boxes popping out, etc. What i want to ask is what is it from? The Core, shader, or memory? How do you identify which of these three are causing it?

Well, if you link the shader and core then you shouldn't have to worry about the shader. Just the core and memory. The way to check is to lower one and then re-test it. I think typically a core fault will cause a driver crash in which case the computer's display would lock up.

Best thing is to test though.

Typically, artifacting is memory related....and crashing is core/shader related. But that is really a broad way to look at it. Core OCs can still cause artifacting and mem OCs can still cause crashing.

Thanks! So does this rule ALWAYS apply to the crashes or artifacting? For example, could a high core cause artifacts?

Btw, my temps are below always around 60 load so theyre fine.

I think he meant unlink the shader/core. That way you are playing with the Core/Memory instead of shaders. You will need to keep your shaders at stock and move up incrementally to find a good medium for your card. Most of the 9800GT's can hit up to 675+MHZ core, and 1000MHZ memory safely.

LoL, ya then I think you are pushing it. Thats some seriously high stock clock for a 9800GT. If you do the bios volt mod you may be able to squeeze around 750MHZ out of the core.
