If i were to run SLI, would i need to identical cards?

To add to that, you need to have the same GPU, but it can be from different companies. I.E. - a 7800GTX from BFG will work with a 7800GTX from eVGA in SLi

Would it be better for me to get another 6600GT 4 SLI, or spent my moey on A 7900GS instead?

7900GS will perform much better, and then you can go to SLI-ed 7900s when the time comes.

Would it be worthwile to upgrade my mobo to an nforce 590 SLI (x16, x16) or should i save my money and stay with x16, x4 ?

According to Tom's Hardware Guide, in Half Life 2, the 7900 GS gets 124 FPS, and the SLI 6600GTs get 57 FPS. In 3DMark06, the 7900GS scores 1972 compared to the SLI 6600's 1190.

I don't think it goes x16 x4, I thought it went x8 x8... that's what I've heard anyway.

No point in upgrading your mobo. Your processor would bottleneck your system way before the PCIe bandwidth. Save your money for now. The only cards that need 16x would be the 8-Series.
