i dunno, cooler just helps with temps, usually to get these insanely higher clocks voltmod is the only way. I'm currently just trying to get my cards temp down while playing long sessions of crysis.

yeah thats doesnt explain anything. when you set the clocks you are at ilde temps so its only gonna go as far as the card can go. getting a better cooler imo is silly unless you voltmod, have poor airflow or have high ambients.

You dont seem to understand what i told you. some people cannot OC very far because they reach the gpu's threshold and it just turns off /restarts/freezes. Thats why people think they can get higher with better cooling.

yep, unfortunately I have high ambients, and I do plan to voltmod possibly.

microman, I don't really get why you are being a dick about this. I am new, but fairly knowlegable on the whole overclocking thing. I am learning by the day, and I havn't reallly had too much experience in the 8800 department. What Tricky said i agree with, but the whole experiment for me was to everclock this, but with good temps and no volt mod. I know from CPUs that every processor has different limits. I know my card with my case cauld not handle over 621mhz, it would artifact. A cooler does help, and I know that because I have even reached 675 and 2200 in 3dmark no problem, but past that i need more power. I just want the thing to last and go fast, and the barrier i have had is heat and i;ve overpassed that now so better cooling does give me better speed.
pics + results will be up tomorrow, peace.

sweet can't wait, just bought a mcw60 water block for my 8800gts just for long sessions of crysis, and of course gears of war and COD4 ; )
murc - I'm going for around the same clocks as you, I'm currently at 600/1700, shooting for around 650/2200 without volt mod, but honestly, I have a feeling the volts are going to hold me back. If anyone has a link as the easiest way to volt mod 8800 link it please. Guess i Shouldn't be to pissed off about my clocks, stock was 513/1600. Memory has got to go up for sure though.

a really good way to test your cards speeds is to download the latest ATITool and install it. it wont work properly, claiming you dont have some driver installed. thats fine, what you want is the Artefact scanner. i use that and Ntune to overclock and am getting some really good, accurate results.
however, my cards are getting way too hot at stock clocks 630/1000 so i've just purchased two sets of the Zalman VF-1000 gpu coolers with the ZM-RHS88 ramsinks. will post results when it all arrives. my question now: i am confused about this strap thing with the GTX clocks. mine come factory 630 core. thats what Ntune reports, as well as GPU-Z and all that. now that i read the post about the straps being all weird, along with that chart, i had a look at Ntune and sure enough, @ 630mhz the 3d clock speed reports 621mhz. so is that what im actually running, 621? how do you work out the straps exactly? is it always a 9mhz difference or is it some kind of strange multiplier thing..sorry if i sound like a dumbarse and arnt explaining myself, but i dont get it..

Yes your running at 621. My card will only go to 648/1000. Anything above that will artifact using ATI Tool as my scanner. By the way, my temps are 45 idle 49 load with an EK full block. So not every one is temp. limited, every case is different. I'm happy to see people are getting real nice clocks with the 8800 series.

gtarmanrob, since you have ntune, i'm guessing you have the nvidia monitor program. Open that thing up and it'll show you you;re real gpu clock. I have mine at 660 right now and its only showing 648. GPU-Z IMO is crap, doesn;t show the real clocks.
