yeah i've now noticed that now. kind of strange. what drivers are you using? i have the latest 163.69 (im running Vista 64-bit) and yeah, my stock clock is 630mhz factory overclocked (621, watever ) but as soon as i touch it just a bit, ATITool starts artefacting like crazy. the cards are idling at like 70c? cant be overheating at the initial clock test. iwould understand if they heated up after a bit, but im talking artefacts in a matter of 1-2seconds. gotta be a driver thing ay? so i need to set it to 660 in Ntune, therefore reporting 648, before i notice a stable change? or should i just revert back to 162.22 drivers for overclocking?

I'm using the same drivers as you. I don't really use ATItool because in the past it hasn;t brought me much luck, i;d rather use 3dmark to check for stability. Restart your computer, when I start doing too many driver-based overclocked they stop working for me and I need to restart. I wouldn;t suggest going to 660, but try 648 or something, the extra shader clock only gives you about 50 points in 3dmark06. You might be right about the initial heat. If you havn't already done so, you should also be manually setting your fan to run at 100%. good luck

cool, cheers mate. so yeah one thing im still confused about sorry, is based on that chart on the first page, it says that the strap for the GTX wont register 648mhz on the core until you set the core to 657+ in Ntune/whatever program you use to overclock. so what exactly do i need to enter in Ntune to report 648mhz on my core? 657mhz? or 660? sorry if its getting repetetive, just trying to get my head around it all. i had no idea. i set it to 648 exactly last night and opened NVmonitor. is still reports 621mhz. didnt bother trying anything more.

as for the extra 50 points, man i could use that, since getting those extra 50 points wil move me up to 8th place in the 3dmark06 top scores thread. im only under the next guy by about 30 or so lol. i'll try the restart aswell, i noticed that ay, if you keep messing with the clocks, even speeds you previously reported as stable tend to fail.

According to that chart, you will have a 648 core and 1512 shader from speeds 635-656. If you set it from 657-661, you will get a 648 core and 1566 shader which will give you a 1-3 fps increase. I don't know if these are healthy speeds for the stock cooler so don't be surprised if it fails. So technically, if you set the speed to 635 you will get a 648 core, and past 657 you will get a faster shader.

aaahhh. i got it now. cool cheers mate. cleared that up.

yeah im not gonna push the shader clocks much harder given that these things idle pretty warm and run pretty hot. i'll wait for my Zalman VF-1000 setups to arrive. for now im gonna try for the 635-656 range. i know that setting 640 for the core crashes and burns in 3dmark06..might go for 635.

this isnt the same for an ultra is it?. Because mine reports each oc i do in nvidia control centre pretty accurate. in gpuz with the core at 690 and the mem at 2300 the shader clock is at 1757.

yeah, sorry that pic doesn't show the bottom too well, but there are actually two free PCI slots which can be used underneath the fan. I'mm too lazy to take another picture so you'll have to take my word for it. Probably best to put it on the bottom one to keep heat away from that 8800.
