Default 8800GTX w/ Thermalright HR-03 *PICS*UPDATED*

Ok, I finally got everything on so I can update this thread, feel free to ask any questions about this in this thread or PM me, I'm glad to help. Got this thing in on friday and had time to work on it yesterday. I know someone has already shown how he installed his on an Ultra, but never hurts to show it again. Sorry for the poo quality of the pics, but I used one of our ancient cameras.

First things first is you want to remove the stock heatsink from the GTX. To do this, all you have to do is remove all the screws at the bottom of the card and two screws that are on the the exhaust plate of the card, its really not that hard. Then you just pull off the heatsink and give it a bit of a wiggle to set those themal pads loose.

Stock Heatsink + naked card

Next, you have to clean off all the components of the card. Every guide I have read about this cooler says that their ramsinks kept on falling off because of the thermal pad residue on the memory chips. I cleaned all of mine with rubbing alcohol and pretty well and I had no problems with them sticking. So make sure you clean the voltage regulators/mem chips very well for the heatsinks to stick. Don't forget to wipe the leftover thermal compound on the GPU core and shader processor.

Clean card + HR-03 Plus

The most time consuming part was puttin on the ram sinks on. All I can really say it put them all on the right place and press hard for everything to stick well. I added a little bit of AS5 to the shader processor and just clicked the IHS heatsink in place.

All heat sinks in order

Now you have to apply thermal paste to the core. I didn;t know how to really do this but it seems that with the 8800 the best thing to do is spead a thin layer of paste over the whole massive heatspreader. Transonic gave me a little tip on how the spread the AS5 evenly since I suck with the whole credit card thing. Just put a ziplock bag around your finger and use it to spread the paste ovenly over the entire core.

AS5 on Core

Now its time to actually mount the cooler onto the card. This wasn't very challenging and the instructions were pretty good so I don't really have any tips for you there.

HR-03 mounted

Last thing to do is install the fan onto the cooler and drop the card into my case. I bought a Scythe KAZE-JYU 92/100mm fan and it was a little tricky to get the included clips to hold it in place. Its on there pretty good so I have no complaints. I got this one since its about as quiet as the fan on my Ultra 120 (30dba compared to 28dba) and pushes out 58CFM. I keep it running at its max 2000rpm because I don;t really hear it, my machine is as loud as it was before.

Fan on

I couldn't get past 621/2000 with my stock cooler and I was getting some rough temps.

STOCK (ona good day, 100% fan speed) 621/2000 Temps: Idle-70 Full Load-95

HR-03 Plus 621/2000 Temps: Idle-50 Full load-65

HR-03 Plus 660(648)/2100 Temps: Idle-52 Full load-67

I'm sorry for those who really wanted to see some crazy overclocks but I'm only doing this to get a decent overclock with no volt modding and I don't think my card would have lasted very long with temps up to 95. Anyways, My temps have dramatically decreased with this thing and my system is much quieter. I have even noticed that my CPU temps are a lot lower so I highly suggest this cooler for people who want some crazy clocks out of the 8800s and who have OC'd quads. If you want anymore info, feel free to ask.

Total Price (including shipping(express air)/tax/fan/cooler) = $66 CND (Not bad at all)

Clocks can only be 621, 648,675,684 for your purposes.
Strapping.

thanks for the replies, what about that GTX ACS3 edition at 626? so ntune defaults these values? When i figure out what clocks I want to use, i'm gonna use nbitor anyways to set them in the card for good. and what about the mem, should i bother to go over 2000?

well then, 648 sounds like a healthy number, so this means I cannot clock it in between 621 and 648?

At the speeds you're most likely to hit, you'll have 2 shader options.

wow, i had no clue, that's messed up, really appreciate the info. Think its safe on the cooler to hit the higher shader speed?
