Quote:
Dear Dean,

My name is Allen Wang, Sales Director of Zotac USA, Inc. Thank you for your interest in our products. We have recently launch our appearance in US within a month. Right now we are still setting up for everything and with channel appearances. We have contact with ASI and other disti's that you may be working very closely. Please let me know your preferred distribution and I will have a representative contact you very shortly. So far we are expecting our very first shipment to arrive toward the end of this month and it should be available for distribution in early December. I will personally inform you once we have launch in the distributions.

Regards,

Allen Wang
Looks like the Zotac 8800 GT is coming over, finally!

8800GT Temperature and Cooling

8800GT is a 65nm/G92 video card so we thought it should be cooler than those 90nm/G80 cards. However, we are getting mixed pictures as more 8800GT roll out. In the past few days, many members report that the idle temperature is 60s and load temperature is high 80s with stock HS. That is hot. We don’t know cause this. It can be its single slot design. Single slot design trades off space with heat/noise. This means not enough vents to blow the hot air out at back of the case. As the more heat generated, fan speed will eventually runs a full speed and noise will increase. The stock HS isn’t just only cooling GPU but also the memory and other board-level components. If the idle temperature is at high 60s and load temperature is at high 80s, you need to invest third-party cooling solutions. At this early stage, no many cooler are available for 8800GT. Thermalright’s HR 03GT is the only cooler designed for 8800GT. It should be in market soon. Another good news is the mounting holes of 8800GT are similar as the 7900GT/GTX so you may try to use Zalman VF700/900. Some members also tried to use Zalman VF1000 LED and Accelero S1 Fanless. For water-cooling, Vadim's universal GPU block produce the 8800GT module.

Monitoring temperature becomes a critical task. Most of GPU tools have real-time temperature display. The problem is that you can’t seat in front of your computer all time. Some sort of automatic monitoring temperature is needed. Here is a simple one.
  • Open Everest.
  • Go to File\preferences\Hardware monitoring\Logging
  • Check the ‘Log sensor readings to CSV log file.
  • Check the ‘Temperatures’ and ‘GPU’ in the listbox.
  • Go to File\preferences\ Hardware monitoring \Update Frequency.
  • Set the seconds for log file.
  • Let the program open.
  • Run your games or benchmark.
  • Open the temp log file on c:\
  • You should see something like this.

lol, I have hit the mid 90's quite a few times. I have excellent airflow in my case and I could figure out why it was running so hot. A few recommendations for other people who have hit these high temperatures.

First, Raise your stock fan speed to at least 65%. That dropped my temperatures a lot.

Second, I found setting an 80 or 120mm fan on the top of the card (side opposite of the fan and heatsink) blowing over the card twords the back of the case will reduce the temperature of the card by 2-5c.

Well those are my cooling solutions until someone comes out with a 8800 GT cooler.

Thanks for the tips. I think they need to improve the drivers so it controls fan better.

Yeah. I was very surprised to find that, the stock fan speed of my 8800GT is 26%.
