looking at your gpu-z stats my old GTS had higher bandwidth(63.4Gb/s) and Texture fillrate(24.6), why is that?

Default advice

Hello chaps, im new here and i registered just to ask you some advice. You sound like you know what your'e talking about!

I have a zotac 8800gt Amp edition coming my way in a few days. I currently have a 7600gt. My questions are purely on installation.

1.) Should i install the drivers from the disk provided, or go straight the the new beta drivers from the website. Or do both?

2.)Should i reinstall my games that i have already started (crysis, ut3)

3.) Do i have to do anything with my bios or anything like that? I currently have 7600gt bios that load up, i dont know how to get them off, or how to put new ones on if necessary. My mobo is ASUS M2NPV-VM 1.

4.) anything important I missed

I just want to make sure this is a clean an installation as possible, both on the hardware and software front.

Thanks a lot chaps, i appreciate the advice

edit- if you want my specs :

-2.50 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
-2 gb RAM
-and ASUSTek Computer INC. M2NPV-VM 1.xx

Welcome.

1. Don't install the drivers from disk. It may be outdated. Get it from nVidia website or the drivers section under this main thread. You can go straight the the new beta drivers from website also. You only install one driver at one time.
2. No. You don't need to reinstall games unless something is wrong.
3. No. At this stage, there is nothing to deal with BIOS.
4. Make sure uninstall the old drivers, restart machine and install the latest driver for your GT. Make sure you connect the power to GT power connector.

It will be nice to fill your specs so others are easy to help you. Hope this helps.

linskingdom, you've done an outstanding job with this thread! I came across it a while back surfing around the OCN forums. I stumbled back this morning searching info on the 8800GT. I'm about to acquire a XFX 8800GT soon and it's nice to see so much info in one place. rep+

because the current GTS has a higher memory bandwidth (320bit) vs the GT (256 bit). the the GTS has 5 memory interfaces, and the GT has 4 (each interface is 64-bit so 64*4=256, and 64*5=320), so you can calculate it like this:

950 (his memory clock) * 4 (interfaces) * 64 (bits per interface) * 2 (it's DDR) / 8 (convert bits to bytes) / 1000 (convert bytes to gigabytes) = 60.8Gbytes memory bandwidth.

using the reverse formula, we can calculate your memory speed on your old GTS:
63.4Gbytes * 1000 * 8 / 2 / 64 / 5 = 792.5 (1585MHz DDR), which if i'm not mistaken, is the default memory speed for a GTS, or at least really close to it.

@ru7hl355
My stats where based on the stock SC clocks. I will update later for o'c and when I change the cooling from stock.

FYI: bear with me if something doesn't seem correct right away. This is an upgrade from a 8600GT and I can not use a GTS since I only have 1 pcie slot and dual-slot card options are not available to me. I'm pushing 50 and my 1st computer was a Com. 64 and 1st game played was Pong.

Whats your fan speed at? If its at 30 you should put it to 50 so it cools it more.
