Why does the 2900XT cost more than the 3870?
For the same reason the GTS costs more than the GT? merely an outdated manufacturing process?

EDIT:
Can you OC a 3870 to outperform or be equal to a Superclocked 8800GT? I ask because I've found some 3870's (by diamond) for as little as $220

The 3870 will perform close to the 8800 GT once OC'ed, but for 220, I would snatch them up. As long as the 8800 GT price gouging is happening, the much cheaper 3870 is a good buy.

Larger memory interface
2900XT = 512bit memory bus
3870, 8800GTS, GT = 256bit memory bus

3850 has more o'c room than the 3870 and 8800GT

Good luck to you. 13k would be nice for you. I'm also hoping to get my OC to 3.6Ghz stable for 24/7 use. I would love to get up to 3.8Ghz for some suicide runs and such. I don't doubt I can do it, I think I should be able to get up there without going over 1.5v vcore, but the temps would be outrageous on air (hence suicide run).
Just broke 13k with an e6600 @ 3.37Ghz. Single 8800GT SC @ 704/2004. 2GB DDR2 @ 1122. Everything on air. (XP)

I installed my HR-03 GT tonight and threw it on the standard way with a Vantec Stealth 92mm. Wrapping it around the other way was out of the question since my chipset cooler is sorta tall. The thing is huge. It takes up 4 Slots with a 92mm fan on it.

It is definitely overkill seeing is that I did not gain any overclock-ability. But with the vantec stealth it is super quiet which was my main concern. I had a feeling I wasn't going to gain any clocks from it. I may run it passive if I can get some better air flow through my case down near the bottom. It should be great for anyone who wants to volt mod their card...

Here are some before and after pics. As you can see, they were quite generous with the thermal paste from the factory, not to mention that the stock heat-sink probably heats the memory instead of cooling it.

It hits about 53 under full load and 42 at idle. The stock HS was 85+ under full load and 47 at idle.

i have a similar setup on my GTS, down to the vantec fan. i didn't get much in the way of overclockability (maybe 10-20MHz on core and memory), but my temps did drop drastically. before, under full load i was pushing 80C, and about 50C idle. with the HR-03+, it's down to 50C under load, and 40C idle. it also helped to bring down my ambient temps considerably. now i just need a pair of HR-05s, as the hottest component in my system is now my MCP.
