Most of us 8800GT owners have heard of this warning:
Quote:
Because of this, I decided to do some digging around to see both sides of this statement, and here's what I found: Reasoning that overclocking the vRAM may be harmful: * Widely known jonnyGURU made the statement * The PCB may be made of a lesser quality material * The memory is actually 2GHz, but the interface can't handle the speed for long periods. * The interface is the one that will fail, not the ram *"this was stripped down from a 'beefier' build. Its intentionally missing a few things that could get it humming along at likely 800/2k SP/and ram @ higher. And again its obviously more then just voltage thats needed. Its a really great platform, that was designed to meet a certain price point,as Nvidia said, its price is a main 'feature'.Your not going to get GTX/ULTRA pcb/parts for GT cost." Reasoning that overclocking the vRAM is not harmful at stock volts: * There is no voltage increase, therefore not much more extra heat * A 10% overclock should be well within the saftey factor * There are cards that run the mem at 2000Mhz at stock( eVGA SSC) * A mod on the eVGA forums posted : "Also, the interface is designed to have some flexibility, and we have no evidence that long term use of 2GHz memory clocks cause failures if ran at the default VMem." Do you think we should heed jonnyGURU's warning? or should we boldly continue to OC to the MAX? after all, what else is RMA for? ![]() Discuss.

If EVGA runs the card's VRAM @ 2GHz, then I don't see a problem. Surely going over 2GHz won't just break it.
I don't understand how the "interface" will break when you clock the VRAM to 2GHz or higher. Doesn't make any sense. Also, why is this the first card I've ever heard of to do this?

eVGA has a card overclocked to 2ghz. They aren't stupid. They wont do it if the card will take damage because of the overclock.
I call this BS. Sure, its never good to overclock, but it wont kill the card.

Don't worry about the memory, some folks over at Xtremesystems volt modded their cards, givin the vRAM significantly more voltage that stock, even up to dangerous levels only yielded <1100 mhz, in fact the had to bump the voltage up (I think) .3 v to get it near low - mid 1000 mhz.
