Just looked at some benchies, and the 8800GT kills the 3850 in most of them! Looks like I'll spend the extra $10 and get an 8800GT then, unless someone else has some comments that might be useful to me.
![]() And I can use my VF900 on it too, that'll rock!

Get the 512. You'll be able to run larger textures at higher resolutions AND higher AA levels. Soon, most games will need 512MB+ for high texture settings if you want AA and widescreen resolutions.

But the 512mb version is what, $70 more? Not worth it from what I've seen...
I saw some comparison benchmarks between the two, and the 512mb of vram only mattered on higher resolutions, like 1600x1200, etc. Any benchmarks to prove otherwise? On the low resolution, there was hardly any difference. Like maybe 5fps less (105 instead of 110) in HL2 @ 1280x1024 and such. So yeah, any benchmarks to back up what you're telling me? EDIT: And btw, these are the benchmarks I was referring to: http://forums.firingsquad.com/firing...sage.id=112869 I can see where the 256mb card lags behind the 512mb, but I can live with 2x AA (heck even 4x AA with the 256mb still gives very playable FPS on those games). Any other comments? Not trying to bash you who suggested the 512mb version btw, just trying to figure out whether it's really worth the extra $$$ or not. And so far I haven't seen that it is...

As textures get larger and more detailed, they'll use more memory... the memory that textures uses is separate from the memory that AA and resolution both need. vmem = resolution memory + AA memory + texture memory In a year, most games @ high textures will use more than 256mb. If you don't want to believe it, go ahead buy what you want, it's not my computer so I don't really care.

So, you wanted proof...
__________________Call of Duty 4, no AA the 8800GT 256 and 512 score the same.... But if you want to add 4x AA, there is a noticeable performance difference AT 1280x1024 even. Yeah, guess that's meaningless, eh? ![]() Like I said before, the extra video ram will help if you like to use AA. If you don't, then knock yourself out with the 256mb version. ![]()

^ Wow, the performance discrepancy between 256MB and 512MB VRAM when Anti-Aliasing/Anisotropic Filtering are applied is quite a bit - regardless of resolution!
Thanks for putting up those benchmarks.

I second that. Anyone who buys an 8800gt 256meg is a fool. You may as well go with a different card with less power because you aren't going to be able to use it. I made the mistake of grabbing a GTS320 and I was aggravated when I couldn't even run Crysis at 1280x1024 at high texture without tons of stuttering. In fact, some of the options were grayed out due to low video memory. Then there was the World in Conflict "out of video memory" errors and plenty of stuttering.
