I don't know...unless the price for the 9600GT is around the price of a 3850 I can't see myself going with it although it looks like Galaxy is doing the cooling portion right with a two slot cooler.

The 8800GT is hovering around $210 after rebate here in Canada and can put the screws to the 9600GT but those are promising tests. If the mid range card can give performance like this the GTX is going to be a monster...even if it is G92.

***EDIT***
Ha! I done been cruisin' for them pict-a-ture thingies and looky here what I found!

This one's just f'in hot! Maybe I should rework my case colors...Go black with white and pink cherry blossoms. A friend can airbrush the case for me. Oooh...that'll be good.

The same reason why the 3850 uses GDDR3 - to keep costs down since it's a mid-range card.

The HD3870x2 also uses GDDR3 and it is currently ATI's top card.

Default MSI GeForce 9800 GX2 specs and picture

Quote:
The frequencies of soon to be released GeForce 9800 GX2 have been the subject of some recent rumors but a little piece of info coming from MSI turns everything around. According to a little web page that was taken down, the MSI N9800GX2-M2D1G is clocked higher than the 600/1500/2000 MHz (GPU/shaders/memory) already reported.

Boasting 1GB of GDDR3(?) memory and OpenGL 2.1 support, MSI's GeForce 9800 GX2 has been posted as having a GPU clock of 660 MHz, Shaders at 1650 MHz and memory at 2400 MHz. The truth is probably somewhere in the between the two said specs. We'll find out soon enough.

VVIKOO announces two custom-cooled GeForce 9600 GT cards

Quote:
Jumping the gun a little and maybe on purpose, Paris-based graphics card manufacturer VVIKOO has now unveiled two GeForce 9600 GT cards. Supporting PCI-Express 2.0, SLI, DirectX 10(.0) and built around the 65nm G94 core the two new cards feature custom cooling systems from Zalman with one of them, the 9600GT Turbo also being factory overclocked.

Boasting 64 Stream Processors the 'regular' GeForce 9600 GT from VVIKOO is clocked at 650, 1625 and 1800 for the GPU, shaders and 512MB of GDDR3 memory and is equipped with a Zalman VF900-Cu-like cooler.

Moving up the food chain, the Turbo version is set to 700 MHz and 2000 MHz for the core and memory respectively (shader clock is probably also higher) and, like the 8800 GT MAX, is cooled by an all-copper Zalman VF1000 cooler with four heatpipes. No word on pricing yet unfortunately.

The 9600GT is looking to be amazing. Any idea on the Australian release date?

Would you want to pay for 2GB of GDDR4? Nope.

With nVidia pounding the crap out of ATI it was a smart move on ATI's part to go with GDDR3 to keep the price low much the same way that nVidia is doing by offering that type of memory on their 9800GX2.

If your looking at buying a 9600 which is said to be about $170 and falls below the 8800GS than buy a 8800GS now from newegg for $149.99 with this promo code (videocard010). That's what I just did. More than liking this price will be going up soon on the 8800GS.
