OK, two questions for me.

1.) How complicated is eVGA's step-up program?
2.) How large would the difference be from an 8800GT to a 9800GT? Worth it, or should I just go for the 9800GTX?

1. not complicated, it is as straightforward as possible, you got 90 days within purchase to get a better card, you pay the difference between the price you bought your card and the step-up card+shipping.

2. From my understanding, the 9800 series doesnt look promising, atleast that source with the terrible 3dmark06 score of like 14k.

Man, im still waiting for that step-up notification so i can send this junk of a card out.

Surfbumb well said. Based on limited info that we know, 9800 doesn't perform that well. I would stick with 8800GT, wait to see some real 9800 benchmarks and decide what's next.

Nice looking results GoOffroad.

My friend just build a rig with a Q6600, Gigabyte P35-DSR3, 2x1GB Ballistix DDR2-1066 and the XFX 8800GT (not sure if it's the XXX edition or not) and you're beating his scores by couple of hundred points. Whether that's because of the processor scores or not, I'm not sure.

I'll ask to see what his video scores were. I'll also check to see if he ran the tests at the default values.

On a somewhat unrelated note I never include processor scores in my tests when comparing cards because they skew the numbers but that's another story. It's a pet peeve of mine. Hehehe.

Another review of a whole pile of cards, some of which I don't even know if we can get here but the front runner for my cash is reviewed and compared to other models as well as to the 8800GT. Not quite what I was hoping for as far as tests go plus it's in Russian (or another such language) so it's hard to get around through the review.

Default Gigabyte preps passive cooler GeForce 9600 GT too

Quote:
Hot on Sparkle's trail Gigabyte is finishing up work on a passively-cooled GeForce 9600 GT of its own. Featuring the cute, cuddly and rather powerful G94 core the card is expected to feature stock clocks and a dual-slot heatsink (SilentPipe 4 maybe) equipped with a lot of aluminum fins and a couple of copper heatpipes. Start looking for this one in stores later next month.
