I am starting this thread because The Official 8800GT Thread is gigantic. I will try to keep it consistent with that "flow". This thread is a subsection; particularly for the 1GB versions of the 8800GT. Please try to keep the comments constructive and specific to the 8800GT 1GB version (all manufacturers). For a plethora of information and posting regarding all other 8800GT regardless of memory size, I suggest going here: The Official 8800GT Info Thread --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- Table of Contents
--------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) 8800GT 1GB Benchmark Leaders: 3dMark06: --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) Overclocking Basics: So this is briefly what I did to overclock my Palit 8800GT Super+ 1GB: --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) My System: As stated above I have a Palit 8800GT Super+ 1GB. I bought the Palit because the price was only 10-20 bucks more than the 512MB version and could possibly have more life than that of the previous versions of the card.

overclocked acc at last

you really should have got the 512MB as having 1GB on a 256bit bus doesnt really give any more performance over the 512MB

That's reason enough to get the 1GB version...

The issue is that the card does not utilize the full 1GB of memory, so it is therefore pointless. Its just a marketing gimmick.

Also just for the fact of cooling that comes stock with the 1GB version vs the 512MB versions it makes sense to me. My card overclocked, fan at 80%, stays below 60C at load. I hear that many 512MB run hotter than that @idle. For the work required and parts to upgrade the 512MB versions, I think paying 10-20 more for the card is worth it, right?

I was playing the Crysis Demo to exercise my card and using RivaTuner was monitoring my local Video Memory usage. And what did I find . . .
__________________I was using 627.2MB of local Memory. Does this mean that I am actually going over the 512MB limit that previous posters stated that I would never use? Anyone more knowledgable then me please let me know. I had the resolution on 1280x1024, Anti-alias x8. When viewing the image zoom in in the upper left hand corner to see the Memory usage. Note that the zoom option in the Opera browser does not exist so download the picture or use IE/Firefox. ![]()

There are two Memory numbers on the screen when I play Crysis which you can see int the upper left corner as maganta looking colors in the pictures above. The first is what RivaTuner calls "Total Memory in usage". The second is what RivaTuner labels as "Local Videomemory usage" and are the numbers that I am quoting.
__________________There is also a third number which is not on the screen displayed which RivaTuner calls "Non-local Videomemory usage". total memory usage= local video memory + non-local videomemory So I am guessing local videomemory=Graphics memory non-local videomemory=RAM

I dont mean to rain on your parade, but i dont see this thread going anywhere. The other thread by linskingdom has EVERYTHING basically. This will just turn into a debate of whether the 1GB memory is worth it/makes much difference, which it isnt/doesnt.
If you look at the benchmarks of the 1GB vs 512MB you will find the 512 beats the 1GB in quite a few GAMES (the numbers that actually matter )
