Default XFX 8800GT XXX 256MB & XFX 9600GT 512MB w/CoD4?
Was looking at upgrading to a 8800GT, but...

The entire reason in getting a new card was for playing Call of Duty 4 (which I still need to purchase).

I'd go for it. That card can easily play the game it comes with.

At that price i would go with the 9600GT, the improvement from the 8800GT isnt that noticeable and the 9600GT scales better in SLI

Those 2 cards are very loud. The fans stay at 100% and cant be adjusted. If you dont mind the noise go for it.

The card youve got will probably play COD4 at 50 + fps.

COD4 isnt much of an intensive game.
