It should be pretty straight forward to do a pretty much new build. If you're going to go that route:

Cheaply:
Cheapest case you like on newegg (I personally would vote for the cheapest CoolerMaster)
Athlon X2 processor (cheapest you can find)
If no overclocking, cheapest GOOD BRAND motherboard (Gigabyte, ASUS, Biostar, eVGA, etc)
2x1GB kit of DDR2 800 (unless you already have a 2x1GB kit of RAM in there)

You'll have to reformat Windows more than likely. That's a fairly easy process if you have an install disc. You can PM or IM myself and I'd be glad to walk you through the process. But it is a fairly easy thing to do.

Make sure you buy a RETAIL processor. It'll come with a stock heat sink and fan, which would be the simplest way to get your feet wet....you don't have to worry about thermal grease....it comes pre-applied.

Also...whichever case you choose, make sure you use as many fans on it that it allows . That way...NO COOLING ISSUES (hopefully).

Glad to see you're in the right place to resolve your problem.

EDIT:
More Expensive but well worth it:
e2180 retail
Abit IP35 Pro
2x1GB kit of DDR2 800
Same case
Same fans

Also unless the chipset was identicle(and even then it doesn't always work) you'd need to reformat and reinstall windows. *edit* well at least that's been my crappy experience, lol.

Youd have to use a different case.. you see dell uses their own form factor. unlike the standars ATX
so one you says i have to re-install windows and reformat ect..I lost my windows copy long ago

And the other one of you says you plug play and go

You will MORE THAN LIKELY have to reinstall. If you are able to plug and play and go...you will more than likely have operating system issues. Like I said though...its really not that difficult to reinstall windows.

I don't know whether to say "nice work on the ghetto mod", or "ouch" for the heatsink. Personally, I would have at least put an aftermarket heatsink on instead of destroying the stock one.

If there's a license key on the side or back or w/e of your Dell then you can "sorta-legally" DL teh compatible windows version and use your "legal key, that you own"

I think if you have the key you cna also request a new CD form M$ for like $15 or something like that but IMHO I'd jsut DL it and burn it. AFAIK since you havea legal license, there's nothing piraty or illegal about it

I'm talking about an aftermarket cooler for the gpu with his new build. Don't know if that was clarified. Also I don't care about post #30 lol.

My bad man, sorry bout that. I thought you were referring to the CPU fan. I can agree with you there as well.
