Check out the GFlops... Originally Nvidia was shooting for that magical 1TFlop(1.1 actually). But apparently the shader clock domain fell well short of their goal.

3 (2 MADD + 1 MUL) * 1300 Shader Clock * 240 SP ~ 933 GFlops

3 * 1389 * 240 SP ~ 1.0TFlops

3 * 1527 * 240 SP ~ 1.1TFlops

So if they were previously guesstimating 1.1TFlops I believe they had expected the GTX280's shader clock to be ~1500mhz... 1300mhz means they fell well short. Hopefully they'll have some OC potential, it'd be nice to break past 1389mhz shader and claim the 1TFlop price.

I would like to know whether or not these cards will outperform the GX2.

I think that's pretty much a given with the quoted prices of this card.

Default Nvidia GeForce GTX 280 needs 550W+ PSUs

Quote:
Arriving on June 17, the GeForce GTX 280 will be Nvidia's highest-end discrete graphics offer and that means both top notch performance and high power requirements. Equipped with 1GB of GDDR3 memory and a 65nm G(T)200 chip, the upcoming card needs additional power from two PCIe connectors - one 6- and one 8-pin. This unfortunately paints a grim picture when it comes to power consumption but as recently revealed by a not at all shy box, the official requirements of the GeForce GTX 280 are not (too) over the top.

To use one GeForce GTX 280 in your system a power supply of at least 550W will be needed and this requirement is actually a little lower that of a GeForce 9800 GX2 (which has two G92 GPUs). Of course, a SLI or triple-SLI setup with the GTX 280 will need a higher-power PSU but that's why shops are selling 1kW - 1.2kW units.

i dont know if you already know, but i was talking to a friend of mine at xs and he says that during his benchies, the 280GTX rapes the 8800Ultra by about 20-25 FPS @ 1280 x 768 in crysis, with the Ultra @ 30-35 FPS and the 280 @ 50~ on Very High settings with 2xAA.

For a single card solution thats pretty epic, so these cards in sLi as the 9800GX2 is, will almost certainly out-perform the 9800GX2

wow. That's a pretty impressive number. Thanks for letting us to know this.
