I thought i'd contribute to this thread..

Found these interesting benchmarks of the gtx 200 series vs ATI's current 3870X2...

..using information that we know of how welll the 3870 X2 performs.. we can figure out estimates of how the Gtx 200 series will perform..

Im going to use call of duty 4 for this.. apparently the GTX 280 gives 1.45 times the performace of a 3870 X2.. so using these benchmarks below.. i able to calculate an estimate for the perfomance we expect to see from the gtx 280..

Because it does not state what resolution the tests were taken at.. im going to do them all

(note it is does not state what system those benchmarks were taken on, so results will not be 100% accurate, the 3870X2 results below were taken on a dual core X6800, 680i, 2GB 1142mhz.. (so an above average machine, which is most likely to be similar to whatever system was used to bench the GTX 280 vs 3870X2))

The formula for these estimated results being (fps of 3870X2)x1.45=(theoretical performance of GTX280)

1024x768 = ~ 139.3 FPS
1280x1024 = ~ 104.4 FPS
1600x1200 = ~ 82.65 FPS
1920x1200 = ~ 73.95 FPS
2560x1600 = ~ 47.58 FPS

Now using these results.. for those of you who are wondering wether it will beat the current 9800GX2 we can compare..

heres a nice graph for you guys..

Now looking at those results i dont believe that they are very far off.. considering the fact the the GTX 280 supposedly has 933Gigaflops of processing power compared tot he 9800GX2's 1152Gigaflops (2x576) of processing power.. so by the looks of it.. the GTX 280 isnt going to outperform a 9800GX2..

But then again.. those results tell all of us that the GTX 280 is going to be one brutal mother of a card seen as the GTX is a single.. and the 9800GX2 is a double.. then think of SLI.. or TRI SLI... 2x GTX280's = slightly less performance than qaud GX2's..

Triple GTX 280 =

Hope this post has enlightened afew of you, eagerly awaiting the arrival of this card..

^^ this is dependant on the game. It doesnt work like this for crysis, however in cod4 or FEAR where people already get lots of FPS then this would take affect

i guess i could of done this comparison using crysis.. but the majority of cards get roughly a 10-15fps difference from 1024x768 to 2560x1600.. i mean firstly.. *** @ crysis.. and secondly it would of been harder to see a correlation in results with such small gaps of FPS between resolutions.

Thanks for all the time and effort you've put into this geezer, but I still think that such vague bar graphs could be as accurate as revolver from half a mile away.

Given the information i/we know, (the leaked gtx 200 vs 3870X2 benchmarks). then my results and graph are pretty accurate..

Besides the point.. i was only giving rough estimates and a proven answer towards wether the question of.. will the gtx 280 be better than the 9800GX2?

Okay, well I see how you calculated the numbers. However, I still would like to see some benchmarks where the info on the computer is given and they do different resolutions.

And i totally agree that it will be better than the 9800gx2 given adequate drivers and a good system, however I still would like to see official benchmarks.

Btw, what is the COD4 test they do? Because I'm almost positive that at 1920x1200 with my set up, I get a constant over 90fps.

I'll be getting GTX280 even though I have a 9800GX2 for a couple of reasons.

1. Drivers and scaling in games: The 9800GX2 like SLI doesn't always scale right in some games. That won't be a problem with GTX280 since it is one GPU.

2. SLI Scaling: Since the GTX280 is a single GPU card, two in SLI should scale like any other recent Nvidia single GPU card (8800GTX, 9800GTX...ect). Normal SLI and Tri-SLI seem to scale better then Quad-SLI.

3. 1GB GDDR3 and 512-bit bus: GTX280 will actually make full use of these specs. The 9800GX2 like SLI doesn't really combine specs like that. True 1GB GDDR3 and a 512-bit bus should lead to smoother gameplay.

To LTSMASH.. with regards to the cod4 test, it states that the mission all ghillied up was fired and left at the spawn point with the average fps recorded.. this part in the game was chosen.. because apparently it is the most graphically demanding..

I agree with you, im not swearing by my results. its just a schoolboy estimate tbh.. i'd still like to see some official results.. but hey.. the blasted thing comes out in 7 days. so we'l see then..
