Default Sli

Hello I am in the process of planning a new build. I have always been planning to do SLI. I got to thinking......

Is SLI worth it? On a couple of my games it has sli setting in the options and my other games don't. Would SLI only effect certain software? or will it do like I always planned and pretty much double my graphics power? Or am I wrong about everything?

Whats the lowdown?

No, it will certainly not completely double performance, as sli is far from perfect, but it does help at high resolutions in sli supported games. Now my first question is this. Can you play all the games that you play with good settings and good fps? I would only go with 2 cards if you aren't happy with the frames you're currently getting. Also, what is the size of your monitor?

In my opinion, sli isn't needed unless you have a 24 inch or higher monitor, and you plan on running it at high resolution. You should be just fine running a single 8800 or higher card. My 8800 ultra runs my 28 inch monitor at 1900x1200 in all my games, and it runs smooth. You should be fine with your current 9600GT. Just my opinion.

so pretty much SLI is only good for resolution?

Would it flat out be a bad move to spend 150 buks on another 9600? I heard the 2 9600's is about as good as one 9800.

I have always been planning on buying a 9800, but they are so damn expensive. I was thinking on having 2 9600's and wait and save up for a good 9800 or even wait till the next gen after that. I am just trying to get the best performance quicker and cheaper.

A 9800 GTX is not that much better than a 9600 GT. It was nvidias cheap way of rebranding yet another G92 card to make it seem better. But again, what size monitor do you have?

And are you happy with the fps you get with one card?

SLI is only worth it if you play at 1680x1050 or higher with all the eye candy a game can offer.

I think its an 18 inch... it certainly isnt a 24 inch.

I would like to play games like COD4 (I can play that at medium low settings) and I would like to play crysis on setting higher than bare minimum. I can deal with the fps's, but I really would like better.

SLI will definitely help you get more fps in COD4 with all graphics/texture options turned up.

Crysis is in it's own category, I played with a single 8800 then went SLI and didn't get the kind of boost I thought I would.

As long as your PSU is up to the task, it will definitely give you a boost and with current 9600GT prices it's probably the least expensive way for you to upgrade.

alright so with my new system built in the future, I will probably get another 9600 (not very expensive) and keep that till the next gen comes out

To be honest, the processor is your bottleneck, not the GT.
