After installing my new 8800gt yesterday, I noticed that only 3.5 of 4gb was available. Before this I had an onboard with 128mb shared. Now after installing, if I go into bios it says that it is using 0. Its not an os issue as it says 3.5 of 4 is used (can't remember the exact wording) in POST. The card is 512mb so I'm slightly suspicious of it. Could the gpu be causing it or is it something else?

If you're using a 32bit OS, it can only handle 4gb. When you put the GT in you forced your OS to handle another 512mb. So the OS drops 512mb of usuable RAM.
If you got a 64bit OS the managable amount would increase. Until then, only 3.5gb.
