Overclocking an 8800 GT. - Overclock.net

I've got an 88'GT, it's around eight months old... it's one of the original ones (pre-ordered, actually), XFX, and stock. Is it a good idea to overclock? My monitor is 1680x1050, and I play CoD4, Crysis, Age of Empires III, and the OB; I plan to buy AWake and Warhead, and I'll keep an eye out for reviews of FC2, Space Siege, and Tiberium. So I'd probably benefit from an OC... how would I go about doing it? How long would it take to OC it? Is it even worth doing it (how much better would it run)?

Also, I hope to SLI in a few months; is it a good idea to mix a nearly 1-year old card with a fresh one? Should I put off the OC?

1. You should be fine overclocking your current XFX 800GT.

2. Yes, it is a good idea to overclock!

Well, if you want to, you can. Depending on if you have a power supply that can handle a little more power and if your temperatures are below the danger level. If the TT 700w you currently have it is the PSU you're using, you'll be fine with it. You may want to check with the temperatures before you do so.

3. You can overclock your video card with programs. There are two programs that are commonly used. 1. RivaTurner to overclock your card, adjust fan speed and monitor temperature. 2. ATITool to scan for artifacts.

4. The time putting into to get a good overclock varies by trail and error. Usually, overclocking the card takes a matter of seconds to adjust the bar and then apply. Scanning for artifacts takes a couple of hours in total.

5. If you need higher FPS, then yes, it is worth it.

6. There shouldn't be a problem mixing old and new cards, but there is one thing, you can only SLI with the same card.

I only uped the core to 700, Shader to 1800 and memory to 1000 and it gave me like 20-30 FPS more

I'm going to go against the grain of the website here...

Overclocking is only worth it if it gains you something. Most people overclock just because they can, but I only do if faced with a specific setting in a game that I can't enable because of a lack of performance.

Gaining 10 fps when the framerate is over 100 is pointless.

Gaining 1 fps when the framerate is 10 fps is equally as pointless.

Gaining 2xAA from overclocking the GPU where it wasn't *quite* a smooth framerate and you had to play on 0xAA is definitely worth it.

2. ...just checked my PSU, and it says it's Antec.

Could have sworn... anyway, it is 700W, just not what I thought it was. GPU temperature (according to Nvidia Monitor) is 51 C.

6. By the same card, do you mean only 8800 GTs with 512MB, or only XFX 8800 GTs with the same specs?

Or you can also use EVGA Precision, which is a toned down RivaTuner for noob-friendly users.

Yeah... I'm using EVGA Precision. Dl'ed Rivatuner and I was a bit overwhelmed.

Okay, so this page says to increase clocks by 10 MHz. Do I need to scan for artifacts everytime I bump it up 10MHz? Also, what's more or less a "high but safe" speed for the GT?

4. Yes, you want no artifacts at all.

6. I have never SLI before, so I don't really know about the specs. You can't do something like 8800GT + 8600GT.

I like to do the 10MHz bump and then scan for artifacts. Just overclock until you get some artifacts and then lower your overclock to a stable settings with no errors.

Quick scan: 15 minutes
Full scan: Couple hours. Two is fine.
