It could be the video itself. Sometimes videos aren't correctly encoded and it comes out choppy. Specially with H.264 hd codecs, a lot of content makers haven't gotten it right.

I can't source this as the source has a lot to do with getting stuff free.

I've gotten too used to the luxury of VLC playing back everything, I had almost forgotten the crazy snipe hunt across the web for new codecs. ![]()

Well, I'd at least try it.

He doesn't need to try Media Player Classic.
If you just install the codecs and carry on using VLC, VLC will use the codecs for you. I saw no improvement playing back files with MPC, over VLC. It's whatever you prefer.

You need a codec that supports Purevideo or Avivo (with ATi). Neither the ATi nor Nvidia driver set include an actual codec to do it, only the ability to support codecs that could. You will need to go to Cyberlink's website and purchase their H.264 codec pack, which is made especially for this purpose. I don't know of any other legal way to acquire the Cyberlink H264 and VC1 codecs.

VLC doesn't use installed codecs, it only uses it's own, and it's MKV decoder isn't multi-threaded. I would install the latest K-Lite and use mplayer classic. Also, CoreAVC gave me a crazy increase in mkv performance. But you have to make sure you enable CoreAVC decoder in mplayer after you install it.
to enable: In mplayer, go to View > Options On the left click External Filters Then click Add Filter and find CoreAVC Video Decoder then click OK Now it should be on the list of external filters. Click it once and on the right, click the bubble for Prefer. (see below if you don't know what im talking about) .Now close mplayer and reopen the mkv file. Right click in the middle of the video and go down to filters sub-menu and see if CoreAVC is listed. If it is, grats CoreAVC is installed and working, if it's not listed, make sure you closed all instances of mplayer. If it's still not there double check that it's added to the external filter list, and it's set to prefer. ![]()

Okay, but you're missing the point. You have to use the Cyberlink codec if you want your GPU to process the decoding. CoreAVC keeps promising this feature, but AFAIK they still haven't delivered it yet. CoreCodec Founder responding to inquiries about GPU support.
CoreAVC will improve your CPU performance and can be enabled per the instructions others have posted above. You'll find that setting up the codec for all DirectX applications can be done the same way using MediaPlayer Classic (select preferred in MPC and it will become the system default and work in WMP). As of this point, your best option is Cyberlink H.264 and VC1. CoreAVC is your second best. Good luck and I hope this helps! Rob

CoreAVC is heavily multithreaded, while ffdshow is mostly singlethreaded. Screw up his codecs? Not if you disable ffdshow... and even if you don't, ffdshow will take priority and CoreAVC just won't do anything. Haali Media Splitter, like Joe said, is only for literally splitting media containers (like MKVs) into individual video, audio, subtitle, etc streams for decoders and players to handle. To OP: Uninstall all codecs, players, whatever. Reboot. Go to http://www.cccp-project.net/ and install that. Don't install the players that come with it. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Combined Community Codec Pack -> Filters -> ffdshow Video Decoder Configuration and under Codecs, set Decoder under H.264/AVC (the first one) to disabled. Don't change anything else, press OK. Get CoreAVC Pro - either buy it, or you-know-what. It's only $8. Install it. Don't touch anything in the config (just don't open it). At this point, I could already decode high action 1080p H.264 on a stock E6420 in realtime. Now, google Media Player Classic Homecinema. MPC-HC is a MPC mod that supports DXVA (= GPU acceleration). You don't need the Cyberlink decoders. Use MPC-HC for all your video needs. Now, not all H.264 videos are DXVA compatible - there are some restrictions, but you shouldn't have trouble past the CoreAVC step anyway. Download 00000.MTS from doom9 - 1920x1080p to test whether you can play it in realtime. If it doesn't play, rename it to .ts - even if MPC doesn't mark it as a known format, just use MPC to open it - it can play TS files.

I'm going to suggest against installing the Combine Community Codec Pack. It's been nothing but a disaster for me in the past.
Media Player Classic Homecinema is availabe at www.shark007.net. Generally, DXVA has more to do with Mpeg-2 than Mpeg-4 AVC. You don't need anything except: 1) a qualifying codec 2) media player classic (because it's external filters setting is the best way to set your default codec for H.264 to be CoreAVC or Cyberlink) Don't use CCCP (ack) and don't use VLC.
