Default 1080p x264 NVIDIA acceleration

My CPU sucks. When I play a 1080p x264 .mkv file, CPU utilization goes to 50% and it's choppy. What happened to GPU-accelerated playback?

I'm using the 177.35 drivers and VLC, is there any magic sauce I need to make the GPU take on this work?

I don't think the 88GTX supports Purevideo 2

I'm pretty sure AVC is not accelerated by nVidia cards. Download CoreAVC, it is probably the best x264 decoder out.

A Quad sorted out my problem. I was using an 8800GT (which is supported) and an E6600 and 1080p playback still was choppy. Since I got this quad I've had no issues.

You should stick to 720 for now.

Of course it is. Both Purevideo and Purevideo 2 support it, but PV2 has enhanced acceleration support. CoreAVC won't make a difference and is likely to screw up his codecs.

Try installing Hali media splitter. IT has specific MKV support.

I'll PM you some details.

Do you have any idea what your talking about?

If you want optimal x264 performance, you install Haali, CoreAVC and MediaPlayer Classic. Haali only allows you to view the different streams within the .mkv file. If you had any knowledge of MKV, you would know that it is only a container, which can contain multiple video, audio and subtitle streams. CoreAVC actually decodes the x264 stream.

I installed hali media splitter, not sure exactly what it's supposed to do.. I tried looking at your link but it doesn't really mention that specifically, I looked at the site and it really doesn't say anything at all.. But installing it and running it in the background, whatever, doesn't help with vlc.

I just want to offload this to my GPU. The CPU is an AMD piece of crap, and I'm not going to invest in a core 2 quad setup a few months before Nehalem just to watch a movie, that's insanity.

Or were Intel right, are Nvidia a bunch of liars, can't the GPU do this without a good CPU? Quite pointless then.

No, I'm not all too sure about what I'm talking about, which is why I PM'd him a link to a thread where someone does know waht they're talking about.

And it was k-lite I was thinking about that messes up your codecs, that and I think the free version of CoreAVC does.

All I know is I don't install any codecs on my system because everytime I follow any set of instructions for best playback, I end up with horrible noise on my picture and I was better off without touching anything. If it's not broken don't fix it.

But it seems his 8800GTX and duo core isn't up to the job. My card was capable of handling x264 using purevideo 2 and it still sucked until I got a quad core.

You really would be better investing in the quad now, because you're having a laugh if you think you're going to afford the new chipset and motherboards on release.

The GPU can, just not your GPU . If you had a radeon 3450, it would decode it fully.

I can play back 1080P AVC content no problem using CoreAVC, Haali and MPC. Your problem baffles me.
