Default 8series air coolers

I have a XFX 8600GT. The little 40mm fan on it is monstrously loud..It overpowers 2 120's, 4 140's, and the cpu cooler, and I can't stand it. The fan doesn't have adjustable speed. Here's the options I have thought of so far to fix it.
1. Buy a different heatsink/fan for it. Most of the ones i see are for 8800's though. Will any of them work? I'm looking for cheap and effective here too.
2. Build a new heatsink and slap a big ol fan on it. My dad has a bunch of heatsink stock from the company he works at. I was going to find a massive piece, replicate the bolt hole pattern from the 8600, and throw a big quiet fan on top.
3. Sell it and get an 8800 or something better. I can afford a better card, but I won't use that much horsepower for quite a while.

I'm kind of stuck on this one. Anybody have any other ideas? What's the best option. thanks everyone.

Just turn the fan off. Or, tape over all the little slots so no sound can escape.

Seriously, though, can you post a pic of the hole pattern?

I'm not sure if you can do this with the 8600 series cards, since the heat sink is smaller than the 8800 series. This is what I did to my card. Maybe you'll get some ideas from it. Just make sure you directly check your temperatures upon start up.

It is a lot quieter and I received a 9C load temperature drop.
