Default Was buying the GTX260 mistake??

Hi guys. Today i "visited" the ati section for fun to see what ati had new and what is being discussed there. I looked at the topic HD4870 vs GTX260 and all of a sudden i am starting to regret my purchase. I never liked ati, i only heard that they had problems with drivers etc. but it seems ati really stood up now. The HD4870 beats the GTX260 in most cases for lower price!! I thought i couldnt go wrong when buying something from the high-end section of nvidia but i am not sure if the GTX260 was a good pick. First as i said HD4870 is a cheaper and more powerful option (at least the benchmarks say so) and secondly because the 55nm GTX260 is coming out in 2 months as i heard. Due to the production process its going to be cheaper and run cooler obviously, not like my 65nm GTX260 now (idle 54, load 80). By the time the 55nm version would come out i could also have saved some more cash and get the GTX280 and have the real topclass which HD4870 cannot face.

What are your views on this? Is the 65nm GTX260 useless when looking at these facts?

Please no fanboy "arguments" like "ati sucks" here, thx.

Your fine with the GTX 260. You could of waited for the 4870 X2.

The HD4870 beats the GTX260, yes, but the margin of victory isn't huge. The biggest difference would then be the price you paid for the GTX260 vs what you can get an HD4870 for now.

So from a performance standpoint, your decision really isn't worth regretting since you're getting very similar performance, unless you really crank the AA up (ie 8x or more), at which point the HD4870 can sometimes outpace even the GTX280.

Is the GTX260 completely useless? Not really. If you have an SLI motherboard, and can get it for a similar price to the HD4870 then it's probably the better choice. Even if you get the 55nm GTX280, the HD4870X2 will likely be out by then and chances are that it will outclass the Nvidia card.

Well, that's why I always try to avoid any sort of "branding" of products. To me, a piece of hardware is just that, a piece of hardware, and I buy whichever has the most bang for my admittedly small amount of spendable bucks.

The GTX260 is by no means useless. It's still a very powerful card. It's only when you take into consideration something that you could have, but chose not to have bought that it loses any value. However, keep in mind that that lost value is only inside your head. If you can return it and get a 4870, that's what I'd do. If you can't, then don't worry about it. You've already bought it, so enjoy it, and don't think about things that can't happen.

Hope I helped. (I just woke up, so please forgive any sort of typos or other errors in my post. >.>)

I personally would have got the 4870 but the 260 is still a good card. Don't regret it or else you will be pissed off

Just dont think about the 4870. GTX 260 is a good card. At least it gets decent FPS on 1680 x 1050 res. with AA and AF.

No problem, glad I could help. I had to do the same thing when I bought this rig. I opted for an AMD 5600+ over an Intel...uninformed buying decision, but hey, it plays games, doesn't bottleneck my 8800GT, and it runs nice and cool.
