Default GPU - CPU balance

I recently upgraded from my old 7600gt to a new evga 8800gt akimbo which started me thinking about the relative gaming performance influence of the cpu and gpu. I was thinking that my new 8800 has finally reached equilibrium with my 6300@3050. given that the 8800 is about 2-3 years newer than the 6300, it seems that cutting edge cpus far exceed the capabilities of cutting edge gpus. so, for gamers, is there any real reason to move beyond the point of diminishing returns and buy top end cpus? it sort of reminds me of this http://www.overclock.net/graphics-ca...d-stop-14.html

What does everyone think?

i think dual core 3.0GHz matches an 8800GT pretty good. Obviously a higher clock wouldn't hurt. I'd say your CPU is slightly behind your GPU in terms of balance. If you feel slowdowns in games it is probably your CPU bottlenecking. Lucky for you, Q6600's are going for about $189.99 now on the egg and can usually easily hit 3.6GHz on 4 cores. Otherwise, E8400's are only $169.99! And those can usually hit 3.6-4.0GHz over 2 cores.

However, makes sure your board supports quad-core/45nm. Double check that if you plan to upgrade to either of those.

Another thing, a 2x2GB RAM kit is a lot easier on your mobo for overclocking than 4x1GB kits.

yup. the rig is aging now but the 8800 breathed new life into everything. I went from having to tune down portal settings to running flat out at 90-120 fps. also, CoH went from 15-20 with ok settings to 50-60 with excellent settings. CS:S video benchmark went from 82.xx to 168.xx furthermore, 3dmark06 went from 3xxx to 11012. wow!
