Yes the HD4870 is better, in some cases. But the HD4850 is not. The only test, which was the 1280x1024 test in GRAW2, showed the HD4850 to be faster than the GTX 260, whopee. The GTX 260 is a better card than the HD4850 performance wise, not in price.

I still say grab that eVGA 9800GTX+ and step up in 90 or less days to a GTX 260+.

My point is that the GTX 260 is barely better than the 4850. You stated the 4870 wasn't better than the 260. The 4870 is a better card than the 4850 and is a better card than the 260. Especially since they're in the same price range. I'd say go with 9800gtx+. Closest thing you can get to a 4850 w/o paying over $200.

C'mon cousins, don't trash the guy's thread with an argument over the subtleties between the cards. Give the man a useful suggestion ^_^

yeah, just wanted to get things straight as to not confuse him . I would still say go w/ the 9800gtx+. I'm thinking of going that route over the 4850, but I'm not sure yet. I don't have a bias for ati or nvidia, just like i don't have a bias for intel or amd. Sometimes one looks prettier .

EDIT: everyone is sayin the prices for the gtx 260 are going to drop soon, so why not wait just a couple months and you can put the extra cash for presents for x-mas .

OR. he can pick up 2 9600gt for 120$. thats right. 120$ (its 119$ but theres a MIR of 60$)!!!!!!!!!!!!! at frys electronics.

9600gt sli = of or better performance than 4870 and even the 9800gx2.
http://www.guru3d.com/category/vga_2/ (proof)

i dont know why people never suggest sli 9600gt, theyre incredibly under rated but deserves to be glorified for the money and the performance when sli'd.

You can always get one 8800GT for now and SLI later. Or get a 9800GTX+ there very cheap now and SLI that later. The GTX 260 would be a good choice,Its up to you.
