I just benchmarked this.
I didn't run multiple tests to get better scores, I just did one test and took the screenshot. I think I can get 19000+ if I just played around with memory OC a little, and that is not the best CPU score I have gotten, so I will have to make couple of runs to see if I can get there. But the bottom line here is that the best score I was able to reach with my original GTX260 was 18712, the best score with my GTX280 was something like 189XX, and this card ran 18959 on its first try. I know it's not a lot, but I was determined to break 19000+ with this system with a single GPU card, and I am almost there. I realize that there is a great debate over ATI vs NVIDIA. I had my share of dilemmas deciding in between them. But this GTX260 with 216core is supposed to pull ahead of 4870 by a hair, and it delivers. I could have gone with GX2 or 4870x2 as well, but from what I have researched, they are a bit glitchy and buggy. For now, I think this 260 will serve me for about a year or so until my next system build. HOWEVER, if they did improve the GTX280's bugs here in the next few months, I will certainly give it another go. I posted some pics of the benchmark scores. I will follow up soon with Crysis benchmark scores and system pics.

Don't worry... I am sure in a next few months, my GTX260 will be replaced by something "better". As long as there are two GPU companies, there will always be something faster and better.

Well, I just ran the 3DMark06 again, without changing my overclocks, but with the Vista Aero off, which I forgot to do in the first run.
I achieved what I sought out to do, which was to reach over 19000 in 3DMark06 with a single GPU and $1500 budget. I feel like I ended up with a really solid system that can handle just about anything I throw at it (with exception of Crysis of course). I still haven't ran my Crysis benchmark yet, so stay tuned...

I'm waiting on evga to verify my invoice so that I can finish my step-up. The Gx2 is good, but glitchy like you said. Seems to be one hell of a card.

Interesting score. With my old pair of 8800GTS G92's I got north of 19k with my cpu at 3.6. At 4ghz I was just over 20k.

Indeed almost 19k that is impressive for a single card. I want to get one now

I may have to dissagree. From personal experience the 280 is not all its cracked up to be. That thing runs HOT. Just like the OP said, its near impossible to push it because of temp problems. With the 260's it seems that you can push it much farther than the 280's because of the temps. My 280 would artifact like crazy as soon as it hit 80c but if i was able to keep it cool then i could OC it alot further but that required like 80% fan. 80% is just too loud for my taste. Ill admit, i should have got the 260's being that i probably could have done just as well.

I don't know why Crysis became the "benchmark" for GPUs since it seems to be heavy NVIDIA friendly. But nevertheless, I play it every now and then, and it seems to be good yardstick to measure capabilities of a GPU, so here it goes.
My tests were done in these sequences... 1. 1680x1050 - All Very High - DX9 - 32Bit Avg FPS: 58.36 Highest FPS: 74.23 2. 1680x1050 - All Very High - DX10 - 32Bit Avg FPS: 29.565 Highest FPS: 35.98 3. 1680x1050 - All Very High - DX10- 64Bit Avg FPS: 29.655 Highest FPS: 36.21 4. 1920x1080 - All High - DX10 - 64Bit Avg FPS: 47.00 Highest FPS: 60.32 This was the first time I methodically benched, but I am glad I did so due to the reason that most Crysis Benchmarks online seems to bench them at lame resolutions which most people don't use with settings most people are not interested in. Crysis only comes to life when using DX10 with very high to high settings. I am sure by decreasing my screen resolution to 1440x900, at Very High Settings, using DX10, I would get around 32FPS, which is playable by all means. I didn't really see too much significant lag during gaming, so I guess that means this card can definitely handle it. I have included screenshots... Enjoy.

I personally think the 260 is the best choice.. it's a great card and it fly's. I also got a 280 to start. and had nothing but problems.
within Seconds of loading Crysis, or GRID. it would go to 109C and the fan would start Pulsating up and down really really loud and hard. then crash. it was nooo good. I've heard many many many stories about the 280 having problems. and hardly any about the 260. I almost think the 280 is to much and not safe. and that the 260 is just perfect. I love my GTX260 and I can safely clock it to 740 MHz core and run 3Dmark06 with no problems.
