First Time Build
|
Hey guys, I have been having a strange problem recently. About a month ago I built my first system, it runs great in most cases... but recently I have been having some difficulty in games... well i guess recently is not really the right word. Ever since I built the computer I was having problems, at first it was constant but I have cut the crashes out all together. But one problem I have is that when I set games at a high resolution (1680x1050) I get some crashes. I get them in Crysis, COD4, and the Grid Demo. I have discovered that when I set Crysis' resolution to 1024 and medium settings, I get no crashes, COD4 its 1280x 1024 and high settings, and Grid... Well grid just sucks, it crashes even on the lowest resoultion. I mean this aint a huge problem, but I would like to be able to play my games at there best resolution. I mean I can understand if my single 9800 gtx xxx card is not quite enough to handle crysis on 1680x1050 with high settings, but it also crashes with 1024 and high settings. ANND, when it crashes in Crysis it kinda goes crazy, the screen gets a weird looking, but i can ctrl alt delete out of it and than open crysis back up and play for like another 5 mins, until it crashes again. COD4 just goes black or grey. I am stumped, could it be a faulty card? Thanks for your help.

Most likely not the card, unless it's unstable overclocks. Are you running your CPU/ram/GPU overclocked? It's most likely a PSU problem, though. Check out this thread at the JohnnyGuru.com forums. This PSU is very overrated in both wattage and +12v amps.

+1 on the PSU
__________________My brother's old school PC has an ATI 3850 in it and doesn't have quite enough amperage and it does the same exact things. Sometimes (as in my bro's situation) you can see the PSU struggling by watching voltages under a 3D load. The voltages will tend to sag, especially the 12V rail. Try HWMonitor from CPUID.com or others to monitor them.

i agree on the PSU. when i first put my rig together i had similar problems. but mostly my computer would just turn off on its own. i called bfg tech support as i thought it was my 9800GTX OCX. everything they told me to do i already tried.(i could make a fortune doing tech support..lol.) so i then thought it was my mother board giving me the problems. i took my computer in to the store i bought my card from and i troubleshooted it with them for free. turned out the Mushkin 750 watt modular psu i purchased from the egg was the problem as it didnt give enough amperage to feed the card. i bought a new power supply and bam! problem fixed. system was rocksolid.
when i shop for power supplies now i dont buy anything that has less than 20 Amps on each +12volt rail. i would suggest getting an antec earthwatts 650 or higher. they may be ugly but they are super beasty power supplies. (i also apologize for all grammar and spelling errors.) ^.^

Agree, the earthwatts are good PSU's for the money.

Its not an overclock problem, I haven't overclocked anything in my system. Its not drivers either. I think I have tried every driver Nvidia has for my card, but I will try updatting my BIOS. But if that isnt the case, can u guys suggest a PSU that WILL work 4 me? And lets not break the bank here. Thanks so much for your help so far
