If I wanted to only use my card for folding. Could I just take the core clock down massively so I could crank up the shaders? That way I could save on temps
Yes..this will save some in temps..but mostly in voltage. Your shaders will need only a minor voltage increase to run stable..[this can be helped by lowering core speeds and mem speeds]..but ultimately the shaders need to be cool to run faster..the colder the better..and then voltage is not required for a much greater range.

ie- my 8800gs

on stock air- needed 1.266v idle to fold stable at 808mhz core/1998mhz shader
on water- needed 1.21v idle to fold stable at 808mhz core and 2106mhz shader

..not only that..but since my temps dropped 45C on load..my stable shader range is now up to 2214mhz..instead of 1998mhz.

- Sounds like you have the SC BIOS..with 1.1v GPU. If you lower the core to 600 ans mem to ~970..you might be able to hit 1944mhz with the shaders for stable folding use. ...giving you ~300 more PPD

Well it sounds like he got to work..but below your desired voltage. I am not sure its the OVP..with a 1.2v cap..it sounds like the capacitors or something in the power phase circuit could be crapping out at that voltage.

Do you have cooling on the VRM's of the GPU...? I know their characteristics change quite a bit when hot..

Then you already have the highest GPUv that your BIOS will allow..time to get out the solder..

new mod just confirmed tonight

EVGA Dual-slot 9600GSO

GPUv: 100k ohm VR -> ground
*stock resistance value ~3.92k ohms

tuning VR for ~72k ohms will get you close to 1.1v..

shot of voltage tuning: post mod

Corresponding resistance, to above voltage: measured, post mod- 3.68k ohms

Just wanted to say thx again to CL3P2O. Getting my voltmod started on my 9600GTs. This is my first time playing with solder and CL has been great at answering all my noob questions via PM.

Here are some pics of my GPUv measuring point I've solder today. Still waiting on my Potentiometers (VR) to arrive before I can go any further.

Yea, my camera doesn't like close up shots.
