There are a couple 4870s in the FS thread for $200. You might be able to even talk the seller down to $180.

Get a 4850. Like you said its cheaper, overclock really great, and is just THE card to have at the moment

Oh, I didn't see that card. It seems to have a reference board design, and is still pretty cheap. Do you think that the cooler on that can handle the card at like 800mhz?

Is that 180 after tax? Does a rebate count?
You can get an XFX 9800GTX+ with Far Cry 2 for 190, plus a 30 dollar rebate

Would it be worth it to pay 20 bucks to get a little bit more performance than the 4850?

But the card that he linked was a 4850...

If I were to do a pencil mod to get the core up to 800MHz, I would get about the same performance as a 4870, right?

I'm pretty sure the 4850 I linked can get around 750 core without upping voltage. 800 might be doable if temperatures are still decent. The 4850s perform about the same with the 9800 GTX+s. If you overclock the 4850 like I did it'll be faster than the 9800GTX+s.

If you can get a 4870 for around $180 then go for it. The 4850s right now are the best performers for your price range.

Not with GDDR5 and and overclock on the 4870. I got mine to 830/1025 pretty easily. I'd say go with the 4870 even if its $20 over your budget. Sell that 9600

I'd get that 2nd 4850, that cooler looks like it actually works.
