WHAT AN IDIOT I AM......

Installing the card had reset my overclocks so i was running the GTX260 benchies with a 2.4GHz cpu rather than 3.45GHz which i tested my 8800GT on.

That could be it but you could also start adding some major AA and notice a difference.

I was going to say you should be seeing quite a difference, I did when I went from XFX 8800GT XXX to the XFX 260 XXX and especially now @ 1920x1200 res.

Just wait 'til you OC. I use VSYNC on most games now, but I noticed my minimum FPS in cod4 went from hitting 30-32 to 44-46, maybe grazing 39, but still no where near 30-32.

I don't even think any cards take advantage of those yet (except maybe the 4870x2). I think cards are still struggling to utilize pcie 1 or 1.1.
