If its GDDR2 then no. If its GDDR3 then yes. But it seems as though the 768mb GDDR3 ones are hard to find. Most of the ones that are still available are GDDR2.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about the whole GDDR2 thing, that's pretty dated now . I think I will get a 9800gt because:
a. They are cheap and give good performance for the price
b. I don't have to upgrade my psu
c. It's an Nvidia card so I can sli later if need be, which is the whole reason why I'll only get an Nvidia card right now.
Now to just find the cheapest one.....TO NEWEGG!!!

Is the only difference between the normal 9800gt and the 9800gtx+ clocks and a few more stream processors?

The 9600gt is the best bang v. buck in just about every bench. Its at least twice as fast as your 8600gt...not to mention @ 1440x900 it'll let you max almost anything.

Would it be worth it to upgrade from a 9600gso to a 9800gt?

Not really. The price difference between the 2 is too great for a small performance increase. Youd be better off getting a whole new card and keeping the GSO. I figured that out when I was contemplating upgrading to a GTX260. It would've cost me $171.00 and 1 video card. For $179.99 I can get a 4870 and keep my GSO. And the 4870 would have similar performance to the GTX260.

9800GT is a step up from 9600GSO.
but if you're upgrading from 9600gso it isn't worth it- the only worthwhile upgrade would be a gtx 260 / 4870

and getting a 4850 or 9800gtx+ will be enough for anything at that res.
