i dont remember what my aa was, but i was running everything at max at 1360x768 in grid.

Your 9800GTX will be alot faster in SLI aware games. The 280-285GTX will be abit faster with stupid levels of AA applied but in SLI games the 9800GTX will be faster. 8800GT's in SLI are in some games ~10-15% faster then a 280GTX so your 9800GTX's should be even faster still.

The only thing that might hold you back is the memory, 512mb vs 1gb

I personally would make do with the 9800GTX's for now and then look at upgrading once the new 300GTX cards are on the horizon.

no its not the 9800GX2 and 9800GTX SLI are on par with each other, and the 9800GX2 and GTX280 are within 5-10% of each other sometimes even closer. A GTX295 or HD4870x2 would be the best singe card options or get a pair of GTX260 216.
