If you don't know what folding is, here is a wonderful guide.
Quote:
What is folding? Folding is a worldwide distributed computing effort conducted by Stanford University to understand how proteins assemble themselves. The real world applications of this research includes potential cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's, cancer, and Parkinson's. Nearly everyone's life has been touched by someone who has had one of these diseases or one of the many other diseases this research is aiming to cure. For more information, please see Stanford's Folding@Home website.
There is a wonderful guide here to get you started.

People have many reasons for running folding@home. There is a thread here that lists many of them. In addition, this thread, explains if Folding@home is worth it and does it make a difference.
----
How to get started folding:
You can download the GPU client here
Your will want to download
Quote:
Windows XP/2003/Vista
System tray client installer with viewer
Then install and configure. You can use any username, but most use their forum name. The team number is 37726

After completing a Work Unit (WU), you can view your results here. Search for your username on the left.

----
What your GPU can produce:

Here is a benchmark thread for GPUs.

----
Whats in it for you?
You don't get paid for folding, but you get the feeling that you are helping man kind. There are prizes every month. Admin is giving away between $200 and $500. You can read more about it here.
----

You do not need to fold 24/7 to be effective. With the GPU client, only folding a few hours a day is possible. With the current powerful GPUs, you can fold for a few hours a day and still get thousands of points per day (ppd).

Folding is not always to setup, but if you have any questions there are many people in the folding@home section that will be more than happy to help. Feel free to ask questions in this thread as well.
