I recently acquired a 9800GX2 by EVGA and I have run into some trouble. When I disable SLI (multi-gpu mode) I get fairly good fps and when I enable it I should get even better but I get worse. Falls from around 23 FPS (with a single gpu) down to 8 FPS (with dual gpu). This SLI drop happens in every game (with different FPS obviously). Can anyone help me let me know what I'm doing wrong or should be doing instead. I am running this card on a GA-EP45-UD3R. I would much appreciate any suggestions.
EDIT: I'd like to add that it was working fine before but after I opened it and decided to change the thermal grease, cause it was old and crusty, when I put it back together it started acting up. To make sure I reopened it and checked everything, then put it back and same problem. I made sure to check all cables and everything but maybe something isn't connected. Does anyone know what this could be a symptom of? RESOLVED: WOW!!! I dunno what happened but I just went back to 174.74 beta drivers. Cause I saw someone with them have very good FPS and now everything works amazing. Crysis went up so much more FPS now. Microstutter is of course worse but not too bad. I can't believe it was a driver problem this whole time. And apparently 180's and above sucks with 9800GX2. Just to let you all know. CORRECTION: I would like to confirm that 182.06 works fine for me as well. Haven't tested 182.08 but 182.50 is confirmed to be a failure. DO NOT DOWNLOAD 182.50 for the 9800GX2.

Sounds like the horrible micro-stuttering problem.
Looks like I won't be getting a 9800GX2 if this problem is still occuring. Did you clean drivers prior to installing the card and installing brand new clean drivers after it was installed? Still sounds like the problem those cards have though from what everyone has told me. Also try other games, since I've been told some games have problems with SLI and mostly with the 9800GX2.

No microstutter is something else, it doesn't affect FPS. It's mini image jitter even when FPS is fine.

Still sounds like the same problem as I've been told about. I've been told in games FPS is decent, and then drops to below 10 and then picks back up and happens over and over, hence a reason I'm not as interested in the card as I was originally.

Actually when I enabled SLI, I don't get drops it is ALWAYS 8 FPS compared to 23 FPS when SLI disabled. It's not a 9800GX2 issue but something is definitely wrong here.

@OP: Did you check the temps on your card? Sounds like your card is overheating and throttling down when both cores are used. Make sure you have adequate airflow and turn the fan speed up to 100%

It was technically working before I opened it. Maybe someone knows what this may be a symptom of if something isn't applied right or disconnected?
