Out of the two, i think i would go with a Overclocked version of the 275
As if you look at the GTX275 OC post, they do seem to OC well and they are the newer tech of the two

The most compelling argument yet

OP: The difference is marginal, I say go for the best deal.

It depends on your resolution. If your 1680x1024 275. If your 1920x1200 has to be a 280 or a 285.

And of course the bigger cards with have more heat. And use more electricity. They will do more calculation per second too. They down clock when not in the 3d mode.

They have more vram and a wider bus.

I like AA and ambient occlusion.

280's/260's you can use a voltage tuner on.

Single card, I think it's a toss-up, I'd get whatever is the better price, because the max playable settings on either card is very likely to be the same.

Going SLI, esp. if water-cooling, I'd go with 280's. The difference in vram and bandwidth on the 280 can come into play when you have two of them, and there are certain situations (albeit rare) where SLI280's could have higher playable settings than SLI275's due to their memory subsystem advantages.

GTX 280 is better no doubt. First of all, all the 55nm cards uses cheapo heatsinks and consequently only runs slightly cooler than the 65nm. Also, just because it's die shrink, doesn't mean clock for clock GTX 275 is faster than GTX 280 lol. I have no idea where people are getting the idea that straight up die shrink (with no core enhancements) = more efficient clock for clock. Also, if you're so worried about electricity, you can use voltage tuner for 65nm cards to lower the stock volts... GTX 275 cards uses cheap voltage regulators so you can't use the voltage tuner.

Also, you can't overclock the memory bus and RAM. 1GB on a 512bit bus > 896MB on a 448bit bus.

I agree with all that, they're all good points, but I want to point out one little detail: When you overclock your vram, you are actually overclocking your memory bus, and bandwidth is a function of bus speed * bus width. Thus, it is possible to make a 448-bit bus perform identically to a 512-bit bus via overclocking the vram by (512-448)/448, or around 14%.

From what I've seen, the RAM on the 275 does OC significantly higher than a 280's vram will. Not 14% better, but pretty close.

The advantage of the 1GB, though, cannot be overcome ... however, it's only important in very limited scenarios, often time when the settings aren't playable to begin with.

I'd also point out that, at least on load, a 275 draws almost the exact same amount of power as a 280.
