Alright, after letting it idle and letting rivatuner work its magic, here are the results.

GPU0 -- Core Temp, 41, Ambient Temp 39, Fan Speed 3027rpm, Fan Duty Cycle 100%

GPU1 -- Core Temp, 43, Ambient Temp 47, Fan Speed 0rpm, Fan Duty Cycle 100%.

So...does this mean that my 9800 GTX's GPU1 fan is busted, or was the card designed to only use one fan? Can I replace this myself? I'm just wondering because my brother doesn't have the receipt for this card so I don't think I can RMA it to PNY. Still unsure about whether a BIOS flash would help, or how to do it in any case.

Thanks, and I'd appreciate any advice!

Doesn't it only have 1 fan anyway?

Nvidia's dual core cards only use one fan to cool two PCB's so Riva tuner will show zero
because it does not receive any information for that fan

OP have you tried cleaning the card with a can O air?

Thanks a million slickwilly, good idea. I took canned air and blew it for a while into all the slots on the card. Well, the computer booted after this without blowing the desk fan in, so that's a good start. When windows started up, I got a few messages about the display driver going down and recovering, and my display went in and out, but that stopped after about 5 minutes, probably when RivaTuner was able to cool things down. Things seem to be doing well.
What I don't get is this -- I hear about people's GX2's going to temps like 80C and over -- why is my card balking when reporting a temperature like 50C?

I know I'll have to pursue a better cooling solution in the future, but would it be alright to either take the side of the case off or blow a desk fan into the case, or would this just ultimately lead to more dust?
