Exclamation GTX 260 display problems

Hey everyone, I just got my XFX GTX 260 Core Edition in the mail from the egg today. I uninstalled the old drivers from my 8600gt and cleaned up any leftover files with driver sweeper. I then used the included cd to install the driver (182.42) because I have heard bad things about the newer drivers. Those installed fine but upon reboot I realized I couldn't change any display settings at all with either the control panel or the Nvidia control panel. I reinstalled those drivers three times and rebooted countless more. I am totally out of ideas. I really want to see how this thing preforms. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

you might need a fresh OS install... that's the worst thing about changing you GPU.

No you dont... i went from my 9800gt to my SLI gtx 260s no problem. I actually had version 185 installed with my gtx 260s. My advice is to update the drivers because it cant get any worse than what it is

Agreed. I upgraded from an 8800 and didn't need to reinstall OS. If you went from Nvidia to ATI, maybe. I would also suggest installing newest driver. I never use the disk provided.

Umm, well, regardless of the things you are hearing about the new drivers, If your current ones aren't working, you should try them anyways.

I tried installing the 186.18 drivers with no change. I really can't do a total windows reinstall because I lost my xp disks, but I do have a set of vista disks if need be. What else could be causing this? Thanks for all the responses!

Does it matter which port I use to plug my monitor into? I've really never had this problem before and am just shooting in the dark here.

Could it be that my monitor isn't installed? I thought they were all just plug-and-play.

Ok, I've found something else out: I'm only having display problems when I'm not in a game. I ran 3dmark 06, CS:S, DoD:S, and a few other similar programs and they all required me to re-select the resolution and video settings but once set they worked fine. I'm even more confused now than I was before...
