In the meantime, if you guys could answer me this, why did it only flare up out of the video card six pin connector ports?

Thanks a lot guys. This forum = win.

*edit*
This is also my first build from scratch, so please excuse the noobyness.
Im 99.9% confident that you shorted your motherboard, the flares from the video cards 6pin might of been caused because you have shortened your pci express to the case, therefore it shortened at the 6pin connectors...

Best of luck with it. You may be rmaing many things to get that system working again. Most likely you didn't fry everything. Sounds like u might have lost 1 card and possibly a motherboard. You might be able to rma them both when you get around to it. Or you may just have t suck it up and buy another one. Don't feel bad though if you don't know you don't know. If you have never seen standoffs before there is no way you would have known to use them.

My 4890 just sits there and sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I wish it did cool stuff like occasionally shoot out flames.

Non-reference cooling FTW!

Although in all honesty, better cooling makes it LESS likely to shoot out flames...

Had a PSU shoot flames at me once after flicking the switch to on. Video card shooting fire wins though.

I did something similar my first build. I put one of the spacers in the wrong spot and fried my board. Everything else was alright though and the place I bought it from gave me a new one. Good luck!

This brings up a good point ... OP ... make sure you ONLY put in the standoffs that align with the holes in your motherboard.

Do a count of the holes in your mobo (most boards have 9), and set aside exactly that number of standoffs before you even start.

Then, if you lay the mobo down and start installing, and you end up puttin a screw through a hole and it doesn't catch a standoff like you expected ... do NOT ignore it and just go 'oh, well, 8 screws is enough'.

Because whilst it would be true that 8 screws is enough, the problem is that there's a standoff where it should not be, and who knows what's on the back of the board at the location where it's at.

Trust me ... and the person I quoted ... we know from experience this is recipe for disaster

Alright. So i installed the standoffs, put the video card back in, powered on, got a quick spark, and failure to launch.

The mobo is still lighting up, and when i hit the power switch all the fans, and the liquid cooling start to run for a quick second, then the power is automatically cut off. So basically i hit the power, it flickers, then turns right back off. If the mobo is fried, which i'm trying to be optimistic about, it's going to be another 2 weeks before i can get another one, since i'm in Iraq right now.

What else could i be missing that would cause a failure to launch?

Really... anything. Most likely its the mobo being dead, or possibly even the PSU.
