Well once you get your new rig, test it out and see if you like the single card performance, and if its not enough for you tell your friend to let you borrow his.

I would not SLI those cards. First, your monitor is a rather low resolution, so the gains will not be great when you compare it to the extra power and heat. Second, I had SLI 8800GTS 640MB cards a couple years ago and they microstuttered real bad. Not sure if that's still the case today, with better drivers and all, but it was really bad back when I had them

What dont you understand? I thought you were getting a new i7 build? Well if so hook it up to your 42inch tv, 1080p, play some games at the settings you like, if it is too slow then you can justify having another card for sli, if the games dont run slow for you then you are set.

Figured it was 1440x900 since I saw the 19" monitor, my bad. Still...I have a hunch they still microstutter. My SLI 8800GT rig does even with the newest drivers.

The fact is 8800GTS 640mb SLI couldn't even out perform a single 8800GTX, and not to mention the consumes much more power and makes much more heat than the single card.
Modern cards with much less power consumption and heat such as HD 4850 or 9800GTX+ @ the $100 price point will out perform the 8800GTX as well. No use recycling old tech. If you can get $40-$60 for each of those cards, you'll be able to afford a brand new card.
