Cool 8800 GTX Ressurrected! *With Video* - Need folding help

I was about to send my 8800 GTX to RMA for the second time but instead of paying 25$ for shipping and waiting a month to get it back I thought hell why don't I just stick it in the oven for a couple of minutes .

Well it turns out the card works perfectly now!!

Here's what happened:

-The card was having vertical line artifacts and was IMPOSSIBLE to boot into Windows 7 without nVidia driver induced BSOD but could boot into Ubuntu with a lot of vertical lines.
-I ripped off the heatsink, cleaned the card off from heatpads and thermal paste with rubbing alcohol.
-Preheated the oven to 385°F
-Stuck in the card elevated by aluminium balls so it was relatively flat, GPU down.
-Baked it for 6min
-Let stand for 30min then reassembled and popped back into my build.
-It worked although it failed after half an hour or so, turns out 6min wasn't enough.
-Redid everything but let it bake for 10min this time around.

This time around it was solid except for the fact that the GPU core temp topped at 125°C and the driver kept saying it had problems. Thinking I cheaped out on the AS5 I take it out and noticed I didn't have the fan plugged in .

Now it's running great at 60ish idle and tops at 88°C under load.

Oven trick FTW, time to stick other dead computer parts in the oven . Next up Asrock P4i65G motherboard!

Update:

I'm new to youtube so ratings and comments are appreciated

Nice. I'm thinking of buying dead cards on ebay and reviving them just for the hell of it. Then fold with them .

My card is now rock solid overclocked at 621/1564/1001 MHz and folding a nice 5754PPD . I'll need to reapply thermal paste though... the core is reaching over 100°C when put under real stress but it's under 90°C when folding so that's acceptable for now. Might volt mod this thing while I'm at it .

Ah and I baked my dead Asrock motherboard... yeah turns out it really is dead .

srry about the Mobo.
cool that your 8800 GTX is working again.
nice to see that "baking" your video seems to work quite well

The mobo was given to me because it didn't work and I thought I could fix it but it looks like it had more than just blown capacitors and micro fissures. Would've been cool to revive and use as an HTPC or something.

What on earth does "baking" stuff do anyway?

Seems crazy but I've seen it work on multiple threads.

I like to see the guy who came up with it.

Well what happens with most cards is that some solder on the chip gets fractured breaking the connection with the rest of the board. These are called micro fractures. So by heating to 385F (very close but not quite the melting point of solder) the solder melts but not enough to liquefy and drip but just enough to reconnect the chip to the board.

edit: BTW this process is used to initially solder chips onto the PCB when they make the boards. Manufactures don't solder the chips terminal by terminal .
