With that budget he won't really be able to find any cards which will play stuff smoothly at that resolution. He would be better off to save up a bit more and get something from the ATI 4800 or 5700 series. Or if he prefers Nvidia something like a GTS 250 or GTX 260. Anything less than that won't really get smooth frame rates at the resolution hes looking to play at.

that would help in narrowing your choice.

Assassins creed 2 will be very demanding on the GPU, a GTX 220 probably won't be able to keep up. Save the money to buy a much better card, it's not worth buying a GTX220 now to find out it won't run any of the games he wants to play when they come out.

for the record since it looks like no one directly answered your question (mostly roundabout answers like mine) a gtx220 is NOT going to be a good upgrade. Those are good for HTPC's and pretty much nothing else.

You mates got some nice hardware there.
__________________Why waste it with a cheap GPU? I would suggest he saves up, or buy an older card, maybe the older top of the range ATI 3870 or 8800gtx, im sure he wont have to save up too much... Brand new parts are great, but some second hand goods can really save your budget and get you top end performance

I would go for the 5770 seeing as they are pretty cheap at the moment and DX11. He can pick up a 5770 from less than $240AUD and he shouldn't need to upgrade for a year or so. Teh 5770 Wouldn't need an aftermarket cooler, they run pretty cool and plus it will void his warranty right away.
