Default Weighing options: GTX 260 core 216 SLI vs. GTX 295 or maybe GT300 card

I'm looking at a GPU upgrade for nVidia 3D vision and I'm trying to work out what to do.

I could get another GTX 260 core 216 for SLI which are pretty cheap now but that would mean I would also need a new Motherboard that supports it. I'd probably get a new i7 CPU and board. This would probably come to around $1200-$1300NZ including the GPU. Or I could just get a new SLI capable MB without a CPU upgrade.

My other option is to stick with my current MB and CPU and get a GTX 295 or maybe a GT300 card when they come out. The GTX 295 is around $750NZ.

Upgrading my MB and CPU and getting SLI seems like a better option for the future but what do you guys think?

Yea I know 3D vision would work with my current setup but it halves frame rates so I really need some more GPU power for the best performance.

I've been reading up on the GT300's and the propects aren't great. Sub 2% yields on the chips :S http://www.semiaccurate.com/2009/09/...eilds-under-2/

I'll have to figure out how long I'm willing to wait haha

Just to compare 2 x gtx 260 216sp vs. 1 x gtx 295, my Vantage results from benching both at max clocks gave me these scores:

SLI'd gtx 260 216s

gtx 295

Hmm.. Well I know SLI 260's perform well and that would be the cheapest GPU upgrade for me. But then there's the motherboard...
Do you guys think i7 and tri-channel ram is really worth it?

I notice a huge difference between Q9650 @ 3.5GHz and this i7 920 @ 3.5GHz. Intel isn't going to phase out X58 for a while so it's pretty safe to upgrade now, unless you want to wait for prices to drop even more. I've noticed a few threads on USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0, but Intel isn't going to support that until late 2011, way after Light Peak comes out. I predict that Light Peak will end up replacing USB. i9's use X58, so I don't see a motherboard/ram upgrade until sometime 2011.

Just wait for the DX11 cards man. buying another GTX would be a waste of money.

I'm in a similar position myself. I'm looking to upgrade my GTX275 to higher spec multiple GPU's, but am going to wait for the GT300 to rear its head before decideing.

Also, keep in mind, as of right now nVidia 3d Vision only supports 2-way sli as well, even though your not going the tri-sli way like I did but just wanted to make you aware of that as well.

And, btw I would buy the 3d vision first before you upgrade your rig just to see if you really need to upgrade or not.

Also, you are right about the fps... sorta. I've noticed that its not necessarily a "halved" fps result. Now it definitely decreases your fps by alot I don't think its quite half, really depends on the game though as well.

So, IMO buy the monitor + glasses for 3d vision, use it for alil bit then see how you wanna upgrade if any.

I will say this though, the 3d vision is totally worth buying, I use mine all the time and its great to have these new games coming out that have great detail then to step it up 1 more notch to make it just that much better. (I hope your refering to using the 3d shutter glasses and not the p.o.s red/blue glasses)
