If you'll do some more research you'll find that me and ChickenInferno are right. Shaders are very temp dependent and these cards have so many shaders crammed onto them that it makes it very hard to OC.

Card goes up in smoke? Is it just so unstable it can't run or is it something else?

Shaders are equivalent to hitting a CPU temperature wall, at a given temperature you just may never be able to stabilize the speed regardless of voltage.

With that being said, I honestly do not know what the maximum safe voltage is for the GTX 295, but I wouldn't personally go anywhere near 2.0v. Also, nice avatar.

Thanks, you guys have been a great help. This really helped me learn more about the shaders, I remember reading that they are pretty moody with temps so thanks for filling me in. I guess 1575 is as far as I'll go with that core and mem.

I don't think OCing should be making a big difference in temps, especially watercooled. I don't notice a difference on my 285 between stock and 741/1580/1323. I haven't seen an example for GPU's or CPU's where increasing clock made more than a 1-2C difference at most. Granted it's been a while since I had a 295 on air, but I remember that temps were fine with the fan at 100% no matter the clock (never upped the voltage, I don't think the Tuner was out yet).

I've never had a card (and I've had at least 15 different models over the years) where temps increased dramatically from just overclocking. Overvolting is of course a whole different story. I have however had a few cards where I could eek out an extra core and shader strap by cranking the fan up to 100%. To me, though, that is a bit silly except for the occasional benchmark run. It's not worth the extra noise just to grab an extra frame or two ...

Not to mention, say I set up an OC on a strap that is on the edge of stability:

I would worry that the ambient temps shifting normally in the environment (seasonally or W/E), would sort of shift you into, and out of, stability.

If the shaders are so sensitive to temps, your rig could be stable in the morning, but unstable for lunch.
