Default Updating MB for Better Compatibilty, I Think?

Hi all pardon the post here, but I have a question that may seem stupid to some people here. I'm updating my 680i SLI board that only supports PCI-e 16x to a 790i SLI board that supports PCI-e 2.0. My video card is a GTX 285 and it supports the 2.0 standard. I assume that the 2.0 standard of my coming MB means that my video card's performance will be twice that of the performance of my current 680i SLI board. I'm not a tech by nature, but I was curious if my new board would double my video card's performance since the 2.0 standard doubles the bandwidth in the PCI-e interface. Can anyone confirm or deny my assumption? Even if to call me an idiot, hopefully someone can inform me on this subject. Thanks in advance.

No. Very few graphics cards use the full x16 2.0 bandwidth; the vast majority are fine with x8 (same bandwidth as x16 1.0). You may see a small improvement, especially at high resolutions, but performance will not double.

Thanks for the reply, man. I was merely curious. I also wanted the 790i board for it's support of DDR3 RAM. I do play games on my PC at higher resolution, about 1680x1050. Maybe not as high as on 23" monitors but I was curious. Thanks for your input.

well
it will run faster , no question about it
but it wont run much faster, but NO WHERE NERE DOUBLED(as mentioned above),
well
if you should decide on getting the 790i, get some nice 1600DDR3 RAM and im sure u can overclock ur CPU to more then "just" 3,25

Thanks, Ladiesman. I was thinking about maxing out my MB's RAM speed with some 2000MHz RAM. I was hoping that would do some good things. Again, thanks for your input.

tbh you would be better off going AM3 or 1366 instead of going sideways to another 775 board. The cost certainly isn't worth the 2FPS increase you are likely to see, to put it bluntly.

I know what you mean, but I only got my Core 2 Quad a few months ago. I was looking for a way to upgrade my system without going all out with an i7 system. Who knows, even if my GPU performance doesn't increase that much, at least with DDR3 RAM I should see some kind of performance enhancement in general. If anything, the new MB I'm getting has 9 SATA headers so it'll allow me more expansion than my current 680i.

It would be a waste of money to buy that board. Any performance gains you'll be looking at will be less than 10%. You can bench before and after to verify if go through with it.

Anyway, there are many better ways to spend the $200 I imagine that board will cost you.

You can get Phenom II X3/AM2+ mobo combo for that price. My buddy got one and was able to unlock the 4th core plus hit about 3.5Ghz. Killer performance for the money.

Whatever you do, don't waste your time and money on that motherboard. If you get a new board get a P45 or X48 board, you only have a single card and Intel chipsets are MUCH more superior in my opinion.

:/ honestly DDR3 should not be any different at all in games... it's your money, but i know how i'd rather spend it.
