Default [vr-zone] Nvidia Fermi to be demonstrated in January

Quote:
Nvidia's original release date was apparently set for late November, but recently Fudzilla reported that this date was shifted to December. Meanwhile, most other sources claimed retail availability of Fermi would only happen in Q1 2010.

Today's reports claim Nvidia are likely to have working samples not before 2nd week of January 2010. Xbitlabs speculates an actual release for February 2010. HardOCP is less optimistic, suggesting any "real availability" is unlikely even for March 2010, in a best case scenario.

As we have noticed in the past, every doom and gloom rumour for Nvidia is followed closely by a shining one, so we will watch out. However, considering we are into November now, and we have no word from Nvidia on the gaming side of Fermi, let alone any demonstrations of games running on Fermi based products, whatsoever, 2010 does sound a much more likely date than December 2009. Having said that, this industry does move at blistering pace, and anything can change.

I just want to see this chip in action. I have been waiting so eagerly for demos and all these delays are killing me.

That being said, from a marketing standpoint this is not good for Nvidia. I know part of their strategy is to keep Fermi looming overhead and prevent gamers from migrating to ATI, but if they can't deliver on their public deadlines then it makes them look incredibly weak and is not good marketing PR. If Fermi is both a computation monster and a gaming godsend then it really won't matter. Have to wonder though about the price on such a large die and an architecture that seems to be giving Nvidia so many problems. Yields will likely be terrible for a while, and all the development cost and R&D has to be made up somewhere.

Gonna go with the 5980 it looks like. I was hoping that this was coming out before christmas but i'm not waiting until Q1 2010 for a *maybe*. If they could give some type of performance charts, i'd be more willing to wait.. but theres just no point waiting 3 months for a card that "may" beat the 5980...

When does ATI release Radeon HD6K? Even if GT300 raises hell, ATI will be close to HD6K by the time it actually makes an impact. If they keep releasing every 6 months like that have been.

At this point I wont be satisfied with FERMi unless its 4x faster than a 5970.

I'm betting a paper launch in December, and then have it demoed in January. I don't know what HardOCP is smoking to make claims of launch in March and possibly Q2, Nvidia has plenty of time to get the A2 silicon out the door for general availability in February. In fact there will likely be small quantities circulating even before that.

So what do you say if it is the same price as the 5970 and is not 4x faster but still noticeably faster? If at that point you still don't have either card it would be a very blunt move to go for the 5970.

We should stop Fermi news from being posted.

1)It's all speculation.
2)It wakes up the lurking fanboys.

(edit: see point 2, 003 beat me into the thread before I could even post.)

As someone who works for a consulting company, I admire their ability to say exactly nothing, at great length, without promising anything or naming any real sources, while extensively referencing other people who also aren't saying anything.
