KDE being bloated I can agree with. For me though, I believe Gnome is big, but not "bloated". Xfce and Fluxbox I consider to be minimal.

I'm not really about being absolutely minimal, so Gnome is a perfect middle in my opinion. I would never use KDE though. Maybe to mess with, but never for everyday use.

Few things, and don't get me wrong, I use Gnome:
1. It's big and bloated. I can feel the unresponsive slowness of gnome. Customization of panels needs major rehauling work (in this way, gnome is very bear). I'm really surprised that little effort has gone into polishing gnome with so many developers. I'm disappointed in their development team for that, when by contrast, the Inkscape development team is much more responsive. If you don't believe gnome is bloated, I'll be glad to start another thread and discuss this matter there.
Problems with Xfce:
1. It's still very much in development. Not complete, in my opinion. But it's small, fast, and can run Gnome apps. My original idea for OCNix was going to be fluxbox, but I have a personal problem using it... it's nice, but it takes getting used to for many of us.

Those are my reasonings... Please feel free to disagree. That's partly the point of an overclock.net community distribution. I shouldn't be calling all the shots.

Obviously the choice of what gui to use is up to the OCNix distribution builder. It should technically be possible to install the gnome desktop environment and remove xfce, if you really want it. (On an OCNix harddrive install, that is.)

I guess it all depends on what your standards are, but I'm not going to deny that Gnome needs some tidying up. No need to start another thread though, but if there's something you'd like to bring to my attention about the subject, PMs are welcome.

As far as what gui goes into OCNix, I personally don't have a problem with installing Gnome (or anything else for that matter) if it's not there already. I like the idea of having xfce on it though, as it would be nice for backup machines I have.

That actually gave me an idea. The penguin is black (of course), but the stomach's typical white spot is molded to fit the shape of the OCN flame in the light blue color that it is. Then of course, the smaller darker part of the flame exists inside that as well (somewhere around bellybutton maybe?). As for the beak, I guess the standard color could apply, but changing the color to something in the OCN color scheme might be something to consider.

If I wern't out of town, I could make a quick rough example, but I don't have my software here, and i'm using a trackpad...

I have a little bit of bad news - I heard back from the founder of the F@H project who said the following:

Thanks for your email. We don't allow for others to distribute the clients we have developed. One possible solution would be for you to develop code to download our clients from our web site. That would be allowable.
Sorry guys. I tried.

oh noes
Well, you tried..

EDIT: Does this mean that we could have an icon/shortcut on the install desktop that the end-user could click, which would auto download both the client from F@H and also initiate the opening of a seperate, auto-opening text file / read-me which explains the howto?
